Order of Malta Ireland - Westport Unit The Westport unit of the Order of Malta was established in 1943 with a view to providing a first aid service to the pilgrims on Croagh Patrick. On the 10th.

The meetings were held in the library in the town hall. Great encouragement was received from Dr. Conor O Malley and Dr. Bill Mc Hugh, both from Galway whom with Dr. Dessie Moran, Westport provided a first aid training course. of October 1943 the Sovereign and Military Order of Malta (Westport Branch, Ambulance Unit) was inaugurated. The founding members consisted of fourteen men from vastly diffe

rent backgrounds, they ranged from doctors to jewelers to teachers, the fourteen men were, Dr.Desmond Moran (who was also the first officer in charge), James O'Connell, William Lyons, Paddy Joe Kelly, Jim Dyar, Stephen Folan, Joe King, Tony King, Jeff O'Malley, P.J. McEvilly, Jim Warde, Jim McLoughlin, Paddy Joe Gibbons. The evening concluded with an All Night Dance which was held in the Grand Central Hall, Westport, with dancing from 9 pm to 8am. In 1968 a committee made up of members of the Order of Malta, local people and club representatives was set up to raise funds to provide a H.Q. and an ambulance for the unit. The sod was turned for the new Headquarters at St. John's Place, St. Mary's Cresent, by Dr William Mc Hugh from Galway and in 1969 the Headquarters was opened. Westport Unit, assisted by units from the length and breath of Ireland provide first aid and Ambulance cover at Croagh Patrick each year, this year been the 80th. time the Ambulance Corps provided the service.

Yesterday evening we celebrated the cadet unit’s regional success with an evening of well-earned relaxation and camaraderie. After weeks of rigorous training, the cadets and their trainers enjoyed a pizza party to unwind and celebrate their achievements. Congratulations to all for their dedication and teamwork!

This year we had the pleasure of hosting the regional cadet competitions. Huge congratulations to all our cadets, competitors and patients alike, for their outstanding participation; you made us incredibly proud. Special congratulations to Rachelle for taking 1st place in the Junior Individual First Aid competition, Ethan and Lily for 1st place in the Junior AADL competition, with Evelyn and Ellen earning 3rd, Cara, Juno, Molly, Mia F and sub Mia C for 2nd place in the Junior First Aid Team event and Conor and Alfie for 2nd place in the CFR competition.

Many thanks to trainers Brian, Lynsey, Aluine, Orlaith, Síofra, Sean, Colm, Niamh, Ruby, Áine, Marissa and Grace for countless training hours amid everyday life. To Michael Conlon OIC, Brian Moran RD, Aluine and Lynsey for organising the venue and schedule, and to Síofra. Thank you to our own Michael H and Brian for examining; Christine for the marks room; Bella, Grace, Bernie and Michael C for the tuck shop; the stewards; the competing units: Ballina, Belmullet, Craughwell and Mervue; and everyone who helped organise and run the event. It was a fantastic achievement for the unit and a proud success for all involved.

A final word of appreciation: to Fergus, Yvonne and Seanie, for allowing us use of the venue, and to CARRACATERING and CORRIB OIL for the food.
