🇵🇹 Your child’s visa has expired, but the residence permit application is still pending. What happens to their right to education and healthcare in Portugal?
🏫 School and healthcare should not have to wait for immigration paperwork.
If your child’s visa is still valid, school enrolment generally follows the standard procedure.
But what if the visa has expired and the residence permit is still pending?
👧👦 Portugal’s National Registry of Foreign Minors provides a mechanism to help ensure that foreign children in an irregular immigration situation can access essential rights.
📄 Through this registration, eligible children can receive a credential facilitating access to:
🏫 Education, under the same conditions as other children.
🏥 Healthcare, in accordance with the applicable legal framework.
⚖️ Important: This credential does not replace a residence permit or regularise the family’s immigration status. The residence application must continue through the appropriate legal procedures.
💡 A pending immigration process should not leave a child behind.
