Karnataka Bans Sale of HFSS Foods Near Schools

Bengaluru

The Food Safety and Drug Administration Department has ordered a ban on the sale, promotion, and advertisement of High Fat, Sugar and Salt ( ) foods within and college campuses and a 50‑metre radius around them.

The directive, issued under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, follows inspections that found refined carbohydrates and processed snacks being served to students.Officials said the move aims to curb rising health risks among children.

Schools must display warning signboards, ensure HFSS items are absent from menus, and vendors near campuses must hold valid licenses. Food Safety Officers will conduct routine inspections, with penalties including product seizures, license suspension, and judicial action for violators.

The advisory also mandates balanced meals in institutions, with 75–80% of menus comprising whole grains, pulses, millets, fruits, vegetables, milk and eggs. Use of oils and ghee must be limited, reheated fats are banned and schools must provide free safe drinking water along with structured meal‑times to promote healthy eating habits.
