Beyond Fabric and Fashion: Are School Uniforms Truly Safe for Students?
A school uniform is more than a symbol of identity and discipline; it is a garment that remains in direct contact with a child's skin for nearly eight hours a day, over 200 days each year.
Recent studies have raised concerns about the presence of certain chemicals in some clothing products, including school uniforms, with reported concentrations in some cases exceeding permissible limits by as much as 7.6 times.
Among these are

• Nonylphenol (NP) - Causes hormone disruption concerns
• Certain Azo Dyes- Causes skin allergies, DNA damage, and cancer concerns
• PFAS & Phthalates - Associated with hormone concerns in scientific studies
This does not imply that every school uniform is unsafe. However, it does highlight the need for greater transparency and informed decision-making.
Practical Steps to Minimize Exposure
• Avoid "Stain-Resistant" or "Wrinkle-Free" Claims
• Wash 2 times Before First Wear
• Prioritize Quality Construction Over Chemical Finishes
When it comes to products that are in prolonged contact with children, transparency should not be viewed as a privilege but as a fundamental responsibility.
