A full-grown male tiger—230 kilograms of him chest-deep in a Tadoba waterhole, water droplets catching the morning light off his whiskers. Eyes half-closed. Completely, utterly at ease.

Our guests sat with him for 55 minutes.

No other vehicles. No other sound. Just still water, the call of a kingfisher somewhere in the dry canopy, and one of the most powerful animals on the planet doing the most human thing in the world, trying to stay cool. This photograph doesn't exist in October. It doesn't exist in March. It only exists in May. 🌡️

She walked in first. Then came three cubs. 🐾

The jeep went silent. Nobody spoke for 47 minutes.

A mother tigress and her three four-month-old cubs cooling off at a Tadoba waterhole in 42°C heat. She let them play, splash, and climb all over her.

We were the only vehicle there.
