Growing something that you can eat is one of the most humbling experiences. The whole journey of a seed to the seed again is a delight to observe. It makes us appreciate the intelligence and beauty of Mother Nature.

We are humbled by the small harvests we receive at regular intervals from Nature. A lot of bottle gourd and ridge gourd has been growing lately at the farm.

Fungi are a sign of a mycelium network under the surface of the soil. For nature enthusiasts like us, watching fungal life mushrooming in the farm is a very satisfying feeling. The growth of fungi indicates good soil health and ample water-holding capacity of the soil. Usually during the monsoons, we observe fungi of different kinds sprouting everywhere, some edible and some poisonous.

Our local team says that this variety of mushrooms is not edible. Owing to that we could only click its photo to share it with you guys. Will share about the edible species of mushrooms if they happen to sprout.

Vegetables struggle a lot during the monsoon, but we keep getting a bit of this and a bit of that at all times.

We have made a rule at our farm— No buying of vegetables for self-consumption. We will only eat what we grow or what grows naturally in and around the farm (only applicable for vegetables and not rice or dal).

We have now become more aware of what greens grow naturally in our surroundings and have started integrating those into our diets. Our understanding of what grows where and when is getting better. Foraging is a fun activity that we should all try at least once with those who possess knowledge about edible weeds.

Harvesting our first bunch of bananas which grew under the shade of cashew trees.

As you can clearly see the plant couldn't grow to its fullest because of the lack of sunlight. The bunch is not of a considerable size, but we have no complaints about that. We were not expecting any fruit, we are happy that we at least got something.

The heirloom seedling has been able to take the beatings of the monsoons, unlike the hybrid seedling. Inherently heirloom seeds portray greater strength compared to hybrid seeds when it comes to dealing with climate change.

One has to be patient with heirloom seeds, as they need to be grown for a few successive seasons to understand their dynamics.

Regrowing the seed in a slightly different location where it would be exposed to some variation in soil type, soil biology, soil moisture, and availability/non-availability of compost will help it further develop its resilience. Heirloom seeds learn to adapt to the changing environment and build a genetic memory with solid survival and thriving traits.

This is the time of the year when we farmers spend hours together in a continued stretch of days enjoying the rains from above and the saturated soils under our feet transplanting rice seedlings.

This is our way of celebrating life. The whole community comes together, sings traditional songs and thank the gods for sending rain. With high spirits and beauty in our hearts, we help each other to grow this crop that feeds so many life forms.

Being close to Nature has taught us one thing, which is performing our actions with an underlying sense of quietude and tranquillity. Awareness in action is more important than focused actions. Building a holistic purview of what we set out to do brings awareness and responsibility in work, 'focus' then becomes a mere byproduct of 'awareness'. Creativity flows into our actions when the environment within is calm, righteous and done with a desire to serve.

One gets more work done with less mental fatigue with this attitude than with any other techniques taught by motivational speakers because you are freed from the worry of the past and anxiety about the future.

Learning from Nature, being close to her, and having gratitude for all that we receive from her helps us stay aligned with our mission of serving all life forms.

Simplicity is key when it comes to living a fulfilling life. Finding joy in things that are local and non-harming to nature should be the way forward as that's true sustainability.

Ps. On our visit to nearby villages for distribution of Vermicompost and Heirloom seeds we came across this amazing natural home which has been painted like a train compartment. That's Behula one of our team
mates in the frame.😄

The photo may not be worth posting but the story is...

We are trying to keep track of the species that we see on our farm. We recently spotted an owl. We were happy to see it and understood why it was here.

We have been having a few 'rats' here and there on our farm, the owl is here exactly for keeping a check on them, it enjoys eating the rodent and helps us to not use our destructive minds to find solutions to deal with rats.

Nature is self-balancing and self-evolving. Letting nature be and letting her decide what is right, letting her act is what permaculture is all about. Witnessing these seamless acts of nature is the most wonderful thing about living close to nature. ☺️
