The roots of the BJP lie in the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, formed in 1951 by Syama Prasad Mookerjee. Following the end of the state of emergency in 1977, the Jana Sangh merged with several other parties to form the Janata Party. The rank and file of the erstwhile Jana Sangh reconvened to form the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1980. BJP has strong presence in Chengannur area since the birth of Bharatiya Jan

a Sangh, which now has more than 20000 members (Based on membership issued by National President & is valid till 31-Dec-2014). The party also has 19 elected members in Grama Panchayaths under Chengannur constituency.
