TheLiverDoc Urges Centre to Revoke Padma Shri Awarded to Herbal Healer Yanung Jamoh Lego
A fresh controversy has emerged after renowned hepatologist Dr. Cyriac Abby Philip, popularly known as TheLiverDoc, urged the Government of India to withdraw the Padma Shri conferred on herbal healer Yanung Jamoh Lego.
In a post on X, Dr. Philip alleged that Jamoh Lego's public claims of curing serious illnesses and chronic diseases violate the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act. He called for a thorough investigation into the claims, arguing that medical assertions capable of influencing public health must be supported by credible scientific evidence.
He further stated that the government should act to safeguard public health and uphold the credibility and sanctity of the Padma Awards. According to Dr. Philip, unverified therapeutic claims could mislead patients and delay access to evidence-based medical treatment.
The remarks have reignited a nationwide debate over the intersection of traditional healing practices, scientific validation, and public health regulation. The controversy has also sparked discussions on how India should balance the recognition of indigenous knowledge with the need for accountability in health-related claims.
As of now, neither the Government of India nor Padma Shri awardee Yanung Jamoh Lego has issued an official response to Dr. Philip's demand.
