Homegrown gifts and a Punya Box

We’re proud to share that Rohan and Anant former LAMP fellows from 2019-20 batch are co-founders of Punya, a start-up which they conceptualized during the fellowship days.

The idea of Punya struck them when they noticed the large-scale food waste around Diwali due to unsustainable gifting practices. Rohan says “Most houses that received sweets were not able to consume all of them because they belonged to nuclear families. So we launched our first offering, which was a Punya Box that had a limited quantity of sweets ideal for a family of four, and the money saved by not sending a large box of sweets went to charity of the donor's choice. And through this, both the sender and the recipient earned Punya”

After a successful Diwali campaign, they ran a similar fundraising campaign centered around handmade quirky gifts for Valentine’s Day in collaboration with Diggin Restaurant. While the campaign went well, they realized that their business model was essentially seasonal and did not go a long way in providing a year-round reliable source of funds for NGOs. Having already established a contact with multiple not-for-profit organizations, they realized that a lot of NGOs were making amazing products but did not have the resources for business development and marketing as they were fully engaged in the development work that they undertook. Anant says “professional marketing, logistics, and after-sales support could push the NGO-made products towards the market in a much better way and provide funding to the NGOs on a continuous basis. This is when we decided to pivot towards a curated products platform model and reached out to more NGOs in this space”

Both the young entrepreneurs say,” the LAMP Fellowship played an important role in our journey. The structure of the sessions, which provided for plentiful time to network and ideate among fellows, played an important role. In addition, we are thankful to the mentoring we received from the LAMP fellowship for helping us”. We wish them all the best for their journey!
