The special issue published by ScienceDirect includes a collection of articles which present a set of updates of the FAO56 - Crop Evapotranspiration: Guidelines to Compute Crop Water Requirements. Updating and advancing in the domain of crop water requirements respond to the need for incorporating in the FAO56 method the results and practices of innovative science and technology, such as data handling and upgrade, better use of the available research, and use of newer tools. Updates and advances bring more accuracy to calculation of crop water requirements, thus better supporting precision agriculture in terms of water application to the crops. Moreover, a better knowledge of evapotranspiration and related processes support improved responses to climate change and to the increased demand for water by other sectors.

ICID's World Register of Irrigation Projects

ICID recently introduced an online Register of the World Register of Irrigation Projects (WIP). The online register tries to capture the development of irrigation worldwide and allows search and analysis of information collected. ICID encourages all the members and non-member countries to provide brief data about their irrigation projects under planning, construction and/or operation in their jurisdictions.

The users will be able to register and submit the projects through the online portal. Contributed projects will first be held in a waiting area. The waiting projects will be examined by a set of one or more reviewers of the National Committee of the country concerned (in case the country is a member of ICID) or by the ICID Central Office (in case of non-member country). The examination will be limited to the checking of the rationality of the values provided and any deviations that may be noticed by them. Once a project is approved by the National Committee/ Central Office ICID, the project will become a part of the online register.

The approved projects will be provided with a recognition certificate which will authenticate the membership of the project in the register. Relevant National Committee representative will be handed over a printed copy of the certificate for further display in the project offices and other locations. ICID National Committee(s) and user(s) contributing the highest number of projects information in a year will be recognized at the next International Executive Council meeting of ICID.

ICID Annual Report

The Annual Report provides a rundown of all the activities conducted by ICID during the year 2018-19 and highlights the milestones achieved so far. However, it should be noted that the road ahead has many hurdles such as lack of human, financial and physical resources that we must pledge to overcome together and I am confident that ‘we can’ and ‘we will’.

This represent a formidable challenge as the land and water resources are limited. Better and efficient management of water, land and crops is the key to meet such challenge. The webinar will attempt to address a number of approaches and cover the following aspects: Increasing water supplies (rainfall harvesting & use of non-conventional water resources) Suitable and more water use efficient irrigation systems and strategies. Suitable crops including less water consuming and non-conventional crops. Suitable land management to save water (conservation tillage, mulching, precision farming…) Water saving through the accurate estimation of crop irrigation requirement Use of models as management tools to save water and assess the impact of climate change on irrigation requirement, growth season length and yield.

BRAZIL AT THE FOREFRONT OF CREATING VALUE OUT OF WATER 🌊 As we celebrate #WorldWaterDay2021 today on the theme of "Valuing Water," we highlight Brazil's consistent efforts and measures to manage and create social value from 12% of the world's freshwater it has. With the successful implementation of various projects like Aquapolo for water reuse, Water Producer Program to control water erosion, Freshwater Program for installing desalination plants in water scare regions and the Cisterns Program for large-scale mainstreaming of rainwater harvesting which received the Future Policy Silver Award in 2017 by the World Future Council, in partnership with the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, Brazil is widely recognized for using low-cost social technologies for transforming the lives of millions of people, particularly women, by valuing its water resources.
