Ghadiok (architect, writer, researcher) & Verendra Wakhloo in conversation with M.N. Ashish Ganju.

Munishwar Nath Ashish Ganju qualified from the Architectural Association School of Architecture in 1966. He returned to India in 1967 for higher studies and has since been researching through teaching and practice. He has taught at the School of Planning and Architecture, and the Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi. He was founding Director of the TVB School of Habitat Studies, New Delhi, Visiting Professor at the University of East London, U.K., and the Universita IUAV di Venezia, Italy. Presently he builds with the Tibetan community in Dharamsala to research the practice of sustainable architecture in the Himalayas. He has been a member of several committees of the Government of India and has also won several prizes in national and international design competitions. He is based in New Delhi, living and working on the urban fringe to demonstrate the principle of urban renewal by citizens.

If the urban fabric within which historic monuments are located is in a state of blight and disrepair, we cannot expect the inhabitants to appreciate the heritage value of the monuments and care for them.

But this World Heritage Day, let us look at how the Mehrauli Conservation project focused on community involvement such that the heritage assets became the joint responsibility of the local community and the State.

Long before the current global health emergency, the objectives of hospital design were not only consistent with a high standard of sustainable & functional architecture, but were also part of a system to confront the impact of infectious diseases which arise from the daily inflow of patients. Infection control addresses factors related to the spread of infections within the hospital building, including prevention, monitoring and management measures.

In his study ‘the need to adapt integrated adaptive hospital design’, Prof. Tran Van Khai from Vietnam talks about design strategies to prevent infection, which we believe is the need of the hour!

The 52nd edition of Architecture and Society, held on 19th November 2019 at the India Habitat Centre, hosted speakers from Ek-Kadam-Aagey — an urban initiative that seeks to rejuvenate neglected pockets of Mehrauli through sustained community action. Led by Sandhya Singhal, Lagan Rai McPereira and Andre J Fanthome, the team’s efforts have paved the way for greater involvement, recognition, and responsibility on the part of the citizens to take stock of things when it comes to confronting quotidian cleanliness problems.
