e agricultural development in the country and facilitate the growth of seed industry to ensure quality seeds and planting material to the farmers.

Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights Authority (PPV&FRA) is inviting applications for various awards/rewards/recognition from Rural/Tribal Communities and Farmers. These Awards are known as Plant Genome Saviour Awards/Rewards/Recognition. For Communities, the award money is Rs. 10 lakhs each (max 5 in a year) and rewards for individual farmer Rs. 1.00 lakh each (max 10 each year).
Last date for application is 3 May 2016.

Under Section 47 of PPV&FR Act 2001, there is a provision of compulsory licensing of protected varieties, if three years after grant of registration, the PBR-holder fails to meet the demands of farmers for the seed or planting material of the variety and to supply the same at reasonable price.

The Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights Authority in consultation with the Central Government and after hearing both the parties may pass an order for the registered proprietor to grant the license on such terms and conditions as the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights Authority deems fit. Furthermore, the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights Authority will determine the duration of the compulsory license on a case-to-case basis but in no event will the duration of the license exceed the total remaining period of the protection.

The National Gene Fund can be also utilized for rewarding the farming communities, particularly the tribal and rural communities engaged in the conservation, improvement and preservation of genetic resources of economic plants and their wild relatives, particularly in the areas identified as agro-biodiversity hotspots.

Conducted 9th DUS Review Meeting at Junagarh Agricultural University, Junagarh from 9-10 March 2015. It was attended by More than 60 organizations which are supporting PPVFRA for DUS test and development of DUS Test Guidelines. During the review, we also felicitated a farmer who has developed a unique carrot seed for which he has been recently awarded by President of India.

We had the unique opportunity to having the presence of Vice-Chancellors Agricultural Universities, DDG (Hort), Directors, Ex-Director of IARI (Dr. SA Patil), and many more dignitaries who deliberated on the issues related to DUS Test, EDVs, Registration of ENVs etc.

On 17 and 18 November, we organized an exhibition of Farmers' varieties at Deendayal Research Institute, Chitrakoot. There were presentation of unique farmers' varieties from all over the country. This was organized with the support of Zonal Project Director-Zone VII, DRI, KVK, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Majhgaon, many Programme Co-ordinators, IGKVV, farmers, and many more. We are grateful to each one of them to demonstrate such uniqueness.
