‘As soon as you dedicate yourself to a cause, it starts having bearings on the person that you ‘become’- by unbecoming, then becoming, and over and over again - it’s a cycle’ I was born in the city of Jaipur, as ‘Princess of Khimsar’. Most of my early childhood was spent in our ancestral village (Khimsar). I received my education from Mayo College, a boarding school in Ajmer. Later, I pursued my Bachelor’s from Lady Shri Ram College for Women in Delhi before earning a Master's degree from London School Of Economics. My feminist journey originated from my experiences as a small child. Growing up I observed a general respect accorded to the women in my family that starkly contrasted with entrenched patriarchy & subservience of women. My Liberal Arts education afforded me perspective and a freedom to think differently. As a student in LSR, a real impetus to critically examine the world developed because I found it difficult to listen to the same old conversations that reeked of chauvinism and mansplaining. At LSE, I curiously picked ‘Gendered Analysis of the Hindu Epic Ramayan’ for my thesis because the toxic & fragile masculinity modules were of profound interest to me. Throughout my academic years, I felt like I had to constantly prove myself to gain equal opportunities to those of my brother despite my academic accomplishments being far better than his. Even though my brother and I had it comparatively easy for ourselves, there was and still is a vast difference in how most modern families raise their sons and daughters. However, my father wanted his daughter to be this level-headed, independent and strong girl who wouldn’t accept nonsense from anyone. My father presented me with an opportunity to contribute to our hotel business while I was still pursuing post-graduate studies. I was unsure and others dismissed my potential in favor of me becoming a social scholar. Soon after I realized that creative fields can have a low compensation ceiling. Encouraged by my father and inspired by my understanding & confidence assumed from growing up in the family business, I took a leap of faith and created ‘Urvashi’s Retreat’. I grew up as an apologetic kid, often split between two very different worlds. One where I am a citizen in a democratic country expected to lead a certain life. And the other as a princess, where I am automatically placed on a high pedestal. You’re caught off guard because apart from an accidental birth which affords you ostensible prominence, you haven’t really done much on your own merit. This creates an inherent conflict between respecting heritage and denouncing it. 2016 & 2017 were two stressful years in my life. I battled emotional stress, which I then internalized before being diagnosed with clinical depression. I also started experiencing major hair loss & energy fatigue. Many doctors dismissed my problems by saying ‘Oh, there is nothing wrong with you. It’s just the weather or season.’ In 2018, I had to be flown back from Manali after a week-long high fever. The pain in my body worsened to the point where I was unable to even open door handles. After investigating, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition called Systemic Lupus, (a disease widely known, thanks to Selena Gomez). The following few months were a difficult mix of intensive treatments. I was assigned to bed rest. For 3 long months I stared out of the window watching the world go past me. Eventually, I realized the importance of embracing the moment and became stronger in the face of adversity. The following year, I was diagnosed with class 5 Lupus Nephritis, which causes kidney inflammation when proteins don’t filter out efficiently. My best treatment option was several months of aggressive steroid therapy. The feeling of being estranged, and even lost, catalized my commitment to help those diagnosed with Lupus. I launched Run For Lupus – an initiative to spread awareness through running and social media campaigns. I hope to run with a shirt that says ‘Run for Lupus’. Hi everyone, I am currently a research assistant for Prof Frank Cowell (LSE), Dr Bill Robinson (Former Chief Economist at KPMG UK), and a bunch of Harvard University-Weiss Family funded projects based in Bihar (India). Previously, I have done my bachelors from Lady Shri Ram College and consequently an MSc in Economics from the London School of Economics.
