The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) turned a Chief Justice’s “cockroach” remark into a viral, satirical youth movement in 48 hours — and the government panicking enough to call it a “national security threat.” It proved that when India’s youth are unheard, they don’t disappear; they re‑channel their energy into memes, movements, and manifestos the establishment can’t control. The opposition dismissed it as a joke; the internet treated it as a verdict — and the lesson is clear: speak to the 367 million young Indians suffocating under unemployment, not just to the gallery.

Six years after UNESCO inscribed the Pink City as a World Heritage Site in 2019 for its exceptional grid planning, architectural coherence and living traditions, the glory is fading fast. In its 2023 and 2025 State of Conservation observations, UNESCO has repeatedly flagged serious threats: widespread encroachments, demolition of historic havelis, unauthorized commercial construction, choking traffic congestion and rising pollution. And now, a deadline of December 2026 has been given to course correct, failing which the city would risk being considered for the “World Heritage in Danger” list — a humiliating downgrade for one of India’s most iconic cities.

Remember those De Beers ads crooning “A diamond is forever”? In India, we flipped the script long ago: Sona hai sada ke liye—gold is forever, darling.

PM Modi, made a bold austerity move, echoing yesterday’s nudge to cut back on oil, fuel, and those shiny temptations. In a nation where gold hoarded in households rivals a chunk of GDP, it’s meant to signal sacrifice for the greater good—less import bills, more economic balance. Noble? Absolutely. Realistic for the Indian woman? About as likely as a Benarasi saree without gold zari.

As India observed World Press Freedom Day on 3 May, we must confront an uncomfortable truth: the digital public square that once empowered millions is now at risk of being silenced through over-regulation.
To be clear: harmful content must be addressed. But regulation must be proportionate, transparent, and subject to judicial oversight. It must clearly distinguish between deliberate falsehoods and legitimate public discourse. Independent fact-checking bodies, clear appeal mechanisms, and robust safeguards against misuse are essential. Without them, we risk turning the digital space from a vibrant marketplace of ideas into a controlled echo chamber.
Tightening control in the name of safety may create a more “orderly” internet, but it will be a poorer, less accountable, and ultimately weaker democracy. Women’s workforce participation in India has jumped to ~40% (PLFS 2025), with wages rising faster than men’s across salaried, self-employed, & casual roles. Great news? Yes—but it’s mostly at the base. The leadership ladder narrows sharply for women, leaving them visible in entry/mid-level but scarce at the top.

In this piece, I unpack the PLFS data: why unpaid care work anchors 44.4% of women out of the labour force, the stubborn 31% wage gap, and the bottleneck that keeps women from decision-making power.
Without clear pipelines, maternity protections, & shared care norms, India’s GDP growth stays self-limited—missing trillions in potential.

Quoted in today’s Times of India on Rajasthan’s summer water crunch—where reservoir storage has dropped to 52% within six months and the real test lies in how we manage demand, delay, and drought preparedness. The pace of decline is worrying; it’s time we treat water not as an infinite resource, but as a scarce public good. Read the full story here:

Delhi’s heatwave right now is a serious warning. Extreme temperatures are becoming our new normal. If civil society keeps the pressure on and the government finally brings in strong, enforceable rules, we can actually save lives and build real protection.

It’s time we stopped calling this just “summer” and started treating extreme heat like the emergency it truly is. If we don’t act now, it risks becoming the deadliest disaster we fail to see.
