GUWAHATI BIOBLITZ 2025 | Celebrating Curiosity, Observation & Biodiversity
What happens when young minds are given the freedom to explore, observe and document nature?
The answer is inspiring!
The Concluding Programme of Guwahati BioBlitz 2025 was held on 22 September 2026 at Maharishi Vidya Mandir III, Barsajai, Guwahati—celebrating a remarkable journey of student-led biodiversity exploration and citizen science.
Organised by Assam Climate Change Management Society (ACCMS), Environment, Forest & Climate Change Department, Government of Assam, in collaboration with Help Earth, Guwahati, the 30-day initiative encouraged students to discover and document biodiversity in and around their everyday surroundings.
📊 The numbers tell the story:
🔎 5,731 biodiversity observations
🌱 1,430 species documented
👩‍🔬 47 student observers
🏫 7 participating schools across Guwahati
From plants and insects to birds, reptiles and mammals, the BioBlitz revealed the extraordinary biodiversity that exists within our urban landscape.
Dr. Jayaditya Purkayastha, Help Earth, who spoke about biodiversity mapping, establishing baselines for long-term monitoring, and the vision of schools becoming “living classrooms” for continuous biodiversity learning.
Dr. Amlan Kumar Dey, Principal, Maharishi Vidya Mandir III, highlighted the importance of connecting young people with nature through direct observation and participation.
Dr. Rizwan Uz Zaman, ACCMS, emphasised the importance of engaging young people in biodiversity documentation and the potential to expand BioBlitz into a sustained approach to biodiversity monitoring and environmental awareness. He emphasised the role of schools, colleges and universities can document local biodiversity and climate which will help all the stakeholders to plan, programmes, and policies in future.
🏆 Celebrating our young biodiversity champions

Explore. Observe. Document. Protect.
Because sometimes, the first step towards conserving nature is simply stopping to notice it.

The Assam Climate Change Management Society (ACCMS), under the Environment, Forest & Climate Change Department, Government of Assam, successfully hosted the State-Level Celebration of World Ozone Day 2026 under the theme “Global Action for a Cooler Planet” on 16th September 2026 at the Assam Administrative Staff College, Jawahar Nagar, Khanapara, Guwahati.

Marking a decisive step for the State, the event featured the historic launch of the Assam Cooling Action Plan (ACAP) by the chief guest of the event Shri Jayanta Mallabaruah, Hon'ble Minister, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Department. The ACAP serves as a comprehensive roadmap to manage growing energy and cooling needs through energy-efficient and climate friendly cooling across Buildings, Industry, Cold Chain, and Transport sectors.

Complementing the launch, a high-level Panel Discussion chaired by Dr. Satyendra Singh, IFS (CEO, ACCMS) and moderated by Ms. Sumedha Malaviya (WRI India) brought together distinguished experts from government, academia, and technical sectors to deliberate on sustaining long-term cooling action across the State.

As the world celebrates the achievements of the Montreal Protocol and a decade of the Kigali Amendment, Assam’s commitment to sustainable cooling reflects the State’s proactive approach towards addressing rising cooling demand, reducing emissions and enhancing climate resilience.

Prepared by ACCMS, Environment, Forest & Climate Change Department, Government of Assam with technical support from WRI India, the Assam Cooling Action Plan is envisioned as a collaborative roadmap to guide coordinated action across departments and stakeholders for a cooler, greener and more resilient Assam.

Speaking in the inaugural session, Dr. Satyendra Singh, IFS, Additional PCCF & CEO, ACCMS, highlighted the invaluable local knowledge of the communities living near rivers, wetlands, and forests, emphasizing that systematic documentation of such knowledge can complement scientific assessments and support informed decision-making.

The inaugural session was attended by Mr. Jochen Luckscheiter, Director, Heinrich Böll Stiftung, New Delhi Regional Office; Dr. Partha Jyoti Das, Senior Scientist and Advisor, NEIWT; Dr. Rizwan Uz Zaman, Technical Consultant, ACCMS; Mr. Tritha Prasad Saikia, Director, NEADS; and Mr. Keshoba Krishna Chatradhara, Convenor, NEIWT.

Around 50 participants, including senior government officials, sector experts, civil society representatives, and students from the northeastern states, took part in the dialogue. The discussions focused on recognising and documenting community knowledge and traditional water practices and mainstreaming them into climate and water policy frameworks. Participants also deliberated on climate-resilient water management, wetlands and springsheds, grassroots knowledge systems, and the importance of integrating scientific evidence with community experiences in policymaking.

Assam Climate Change Management Society (ACCMS), under the Environment, Forest and Climate Change Department, Government of Assam, in collaboration with Vasudha Foundation and WRI India, organised a Data Validation Workshop for Assam's District-Level Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory.

Addressing the event, Shri Mahendra Kumar Yadava, Special Chief Secretary, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Department, emphasised that a robust GHG inventory is essential to understanding Assam’s emissions profile and designing informed climate actions and to give directions for sustainable developmental planning. He also called for stronger inter-departmental collaboration and data sharing to build a credible and comprehensive inventory.

Dr. Satyendra Singh, IFS, Addl. PCCF & CEO of ACCMS, stressed the importance of establishing district-level baselines to support evidence-based planning and targeted mitigation strategies. Moving forward, this finalized inventory will serve as the foundation for developing sector-specific decarbonization plans across Assam's priority areas.

The inaugural session also included addresses by Shri P.L.N. Raju, Special Secretary to the Science & Technology Department, Government of Assam; Dr. Rizwan Uz Zaman, Technical Consultant, ACCMS; Mr. Subrata Chakrabarty, Associate Program Director, WRI India; Ms. Rini Dutt, Associate Director - Climate Policy and Director - Strategic Engagement and Partnerships, Vasudha Foundation.
