Environment is the most discussed topic in today’s world primarily because of two prime reasons. Firstly, due to the environmental degradation that has threatened the survival of all life forms. Secondly, it is environmental management, which included successful utilization of environmental resources and solution to environmental problems. The entire Northeastern region is rich in natural resource
s – oil, natural gas, minerals and most importantly, valuable forests. Seven sister states together with the brother state Sikkim comprise the whole landmass of North-Eastern India. The Northeastern region receives maximum rainfall every year and hence the lush greenery. However, it is an irony that the rapid growth in population is creating a number of environmental problems because of uncontrolled urbanization, industrialization and destruction of forests, which is a major concern today. The India Climate Statistics Report published by the Central Statistics Office, Government of India signals possible climate changes in the NE region as a whole. The Report talks about a warming trend in the region with about 6 to 8 percent decline in rainfall during the last one hundred years. Some of the major environmental issues Northeast India faces include deforestation, flood, industrial activities like coal mining operations, crude oil exploration, petroleum refineries, fertilizer industries, paper industries, cement industries, vehicular emissions, etc. After the successful completion of the 8th Edition of Northeast Green Summit held at Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, Vibgyor Media Solutions Limited, an event management company based in Guwahati, is planning to hold the 9th edition of the Northeast Green Summit 2024 at Cotton University campus, Guwahati this year with the underlying theme being – OLLUTION CONTROL & WASTE MANAGEMENT FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT’ with focus on the environmental degradation in NE.
