Every surviving plant is a lesson in ecosystem restoration.

In Guijan, Tinsukia, we planted flood-tolerant species as a nature-based solution to ongoing river erosion. But planting is only the first step, what survives after a flood helps us understand what works.

The Balipara Foundation team conducted a survival assessment to see which plants survived flooding and continued to grow. These observations help us understand which species show greater resilience to flood conditions.

By combining field observations with survival data, we can make better decisions about which plants to grow, where to plant them, and how to build more resilient landscapes for the future.

In West Garo Hills, Meghalaya, women from local Self-Help Groups are leading a community-based restoration initiative to bring fallow shifting-cultivation land back to life.

Led by Sopilla Ch. Marak, the President of Chibasal SHG, the community has planted 2,000 native fruit-bearing trees, helping restore biodiversity and strengthen habitat for the endangered Western Hoolock Gibbon.

The community-led nursery is also creating an additional livelihood opportunity for the community, highlighting how ecological restoration can go hand in hand with local enterprise.

With the support of local forest officials and active participation from the Selbalgre community, the initiative is building local stewardship for a healthier, more biodiverse landscape.

In Nanadisa village, Dima Hasao, community members are restoring their landscape through a community-led rewilding and agroforestry initiative, supported by the Indian Himalayan Rewilding Grant, presented at the Balipara Foundation Awards 2024.

With more than 5,000 saplings planted so far, including Kadam, Ghura Neem, Mahogany, Litchi and Pear, the initiative is strengthening both local biodiversity and livelihood opportunities.

Through hands-on training, community members have built skills in species selection, plantation techniques, and basic monitoring of plant survival and growth, strengthening their capacity to lead restoration on their own land.

The Asian Elephant Secretariat, Balipara Foundation, in collaboration with the Department of Zoology and Department of Environmental Sciences, Gauhati University, brought students, researchers, and scholars together to celebrate World Elephant Day through an open storytelling session and quiz.

The programme opened with reflections on the vital role elephants play in our ecosystems and the deep connections people share with them. Participants then took the floor, sharing personal experiences, from experiences of human–elephant conflict and childhood memories to unforgettable encounters in the field.

Across these stories emerged a shared appreciation for elephants’ intelligence, sensitivity, and resilience, and the lessons they offer us about coexistence. The storytelling session was followed by an engaging quiz led by Hridoy Ranjan Saikia, Teaching Associate, bringing the celebration to a lively close.

A day of stories, learning, and shared experiences, reminding us that conserving elephants is also about preserving the connections between people, wildlife, and the landscapes we share.
