Strong Condemnation Against the Irresponsible Remarks by Dr. Momin, MLA Bokajan
We the Riso Nimso Aterank (LRNA), the people of Karbi Anglong, express our deep disappointment and strong condemnation of the recent statement made by Dr. Momin, Speaker of the Assam Legislative Council and MLA of Bokajan. His comments belittling the long-standing demand for the implementation of Article 244(A) are not only irresponsible and misleading, but they also undermine the democratic aspirations and struggles of the indigenous people of this region.
The assertion that the existence of a college, university, or hospital is enough to dismiss the need for constitutional safeguards reflects a shallow understanding of the socio-political reality of Karbi Anglong. Article 244(A) is not a demand for infrastructure alone—it is a demand for genuine autonomy, protection of identity, culture, land, and political rights under the Indian Constitution. To trivialize this aspiration is to insult the collective will and historic sacrifices of the people.
Furthermore, his derogatory and baseless claim that we are “enjoying” the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council due to his paternal uncle’s legacy is both arrogant and disrespectful. The KAAC exists because of people’s movements, protests, sacrifices, and decades of political negotiations—not the benevolence of one family or individual. Haven't he forgotten the founder of Karbi Anglong, Ru.Semson Sing Engti ?
We urge Dr. Momin to withdraw his statements, refrain from misleading the public, and to remember that as a public representative, he is duty-bound to uphold the voices and aspirations of his people, not suppress them.
Karbi Anglong deserves justice, dignity, and the rightful implementation of Article 244(A)—no less.
