East Kolkata Wetlands Management Authority East Kolkata Wetlands is a RAMSAR site. The EKW nurtures the world’s largest wastewater-fed aquacu This is the official page of the EKWMA.

The East Kolkata Wetlands (EKW), located on the eastern fringes of Kolkata city (Geographical coordinate 220 27’ 00"N, 880 27’ 00" E), are one of the largest assemblages of sewage fed fish ponds. These wetlands are well-known for natural urban wastewater treatment system. The EKW not only treats urban wastewater but also fulfil substantially the requirement of fish, vegetables and food-grains in t

he city. The NGO, People United for Better Living in Calcutta (PUBLIC) filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Calcutta High Court arguing for the importance of the wetlands. In 1992, Hon'ble Justice Umesh Chandra Banerjee on this matter gave a landmark judgment which goes into the definition of wetlands and also mentioned that wetland should be preserved and no interference or reclamation should be permitted. On 19th August, 2002 these wetlands were included in the RAMSAR list of "Wetlands of International Importance." EKW is selected "on account of their international significance in terms of ecology, botany, zoology, limnology, or hydrology" (www.ramsar.org). For conservation and better management of the EKW, the Government of West Bengal enacted the East Kolkata Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Act, 2006 which paved way for establishment of the East Kolkata Wetlands Management Authority (EKWMA). The EKWMA, a Statutory Authority under Department of Environment, Government of West Bengal, is regulating the activities within the EKW for its wise use. This page is here to spread awareness about the necessity of conservation of EKW and to get support from larger community for its preservation. This page also encourages people to share their opinion and thought about better management of EKW. For any query feel free to drop a message. We look forward to see your views and feedback.
