മധ്യ കേരളത്തിലെ ഒരു പ്രധാന നഗരമാണ്‌ കോട്ടയം. കോട്ടയം ജില്ലയുടെ ആസ്ഥാനനഗരവും ആണ്‌ കോട്ടയം.നഗരത്തിന്റെ കേന്ദ്ര ബിന്ദു തിരുനക്കര. കോട്ടയത്തിന്റെ പുസ്തക പ്രസിദ്ധീകരണ മേഖലയിലുള്ള പാരമ്പര്യം കണക്കിലെടുത്ത് ഈ നഗരം “അക്ഷര നഗരി” എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. മലയാളമനോരമ, ദീപിക, മംഗളം മുതലായ പ്രധാന പത്രങ്ങള്‍ ആരംഭിച്ചതും അവയുടെ ആസ്ഥാനവും കോട്ടയം നഗരത്തിലാണ്. കോട്ടയം നഗരസഭ 1924 സ്ഥാപിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. 1989 ല്‍, ഭാരതത്തില്‍ 100 % സാക്ഷരത നേടിയ ആദ്യ നഗരമായി കോട്ടയം മാറി. ഇപ്പോള്‍ കോട്ടയം പുകയില വിമുക്ത നഗരം കൂടിയാണ്.
