Evaluation of Sub-national progress towards ‘TB Free’ status in India, using district level annual survey

The Government of India has set an ambitious goal to achieve Ending Tuberculosis (TB), by reducing the incidence of new TB % cases by 80 by 2025. Evidence suggests that there is wide variation in TB burden across the country and, the levels of efforts across districts towards this path to end TB are also varied. A District or a State will be recognized for achieving “TB Free” status though monetary and non-monetary awards upon verification of successful achievement of targets outlined (80% reduction in TB incidence from 2015 as per SDG Framework). The MoHFW sought claims/applications for the award from States/Districts under this initiative. Indian Council of Medical Research –National Institute for Research in Tuberculosis (ICMR- NIRT), has been entrusted by the CTD with the task of verification of the claims made by districts and states. In order to verify the claims made by districts with respect to their progress towards elimination of TB, it is essential to estimate the incidence of bacteriologically positive pulmonary tuberculosis and the prevalence of symptomatic and currently as well as previously treated TB patients in the community.
