The Ganges river system sustains the lives and livelihoods of millions of people living across the densely populated plains of the Ganga basin. However, this lifeline is under severe threat due to overexploitation, rising population pressure, changes in the river’s natural course, and the accelerating impacts of climate change.
If these challenges continue unchecked, we risk losing this vital flow of life. The consequences will be devastating—scarcity of safe drinking water, food insecurity due to declining agriculture, and ultimately, a threat to human survival itself. After all, there is no life without water.
Now is the time to stand up and act.
Let us come together to protect the flow of the Ganges, conserve wetlands, preserve forests, and safeguard natural water bodies—for ourselves and for future generations.
Join the mission to save the Ganges river system. Act locally, protect water resources, and contribute to saving Ganga—for life.

Water scarcity is a top risk to global food production. Estimates call for a need to double the production of food by 2050, but water scarcity might spur a future food crisis because smallholder farmers, who are especially at risk, produce a significant share of the world’s food. Many poor smallholders already do not have enough water to meet their needs; and by 2050, nearly four billion people could be experiencing severe water stress.

Tools like wetting front detectors, for example, help farmers apply water more efficiently, saving time and water and improving crop yield and quality. However, transportation costs and import restrictions often limit adoption. Invest in Farm Pond for increased water storage and Solar technology can lead to significant improvement in water availability for irrigation purposes.

Birds are friend of River:

Lots of birds can be found around freshwater—even those which aren’t typically considered freshwater species. They are hives of activity, as they provide both a source of drinking water and a plentiful supply of insects.

Herons can often be seen wading through the shallow water, searching for fish. The little egret and larger great white egret hunt in a similar way, but are much easier to spot due to their striking white colouration!

You will often see groups of birds paddling along the water’s surface, occasionally diving down to forage or clean their feathers. This includes moorhens, coots, greater crested grebes, goosander, and the true family favourite: ducks!

Smaller birds can also be seen around freshwater. The most iconic of these is the Kingfisher, who perches above slow-moving water to look for small fish. Of almost equal fame in the birding community, the dipper is another favourite. They are the only known bird which can walk under water! Grey wagtails, sand martins and lapwings can also be spotted darting across the surface of the water.

Did you know? The presence of River Dolphin ( Sons or Susu) and it's co-species in Ganga is indicator of river health.
