With the objective of strengthening safety awareness and ensuring safe train operations within the North Eastern Railway, Lucknow Division, a "Shunting Mela Campaign" and Safety Seminar were organized at Gonda Station and the Gonda Crew Lobby (under the Gonda jurisdiction). This initiative was conducted under the guidance of Divisional Railway Manager, Shri Gaurav Agarwal and the leadership of Senior Divisional Safety Officer, Dr. Shilpi Kannaujia. Through this campaign, special emphasis was placed on promoting a safe work culture by raising awareness among railway employees regarding safety regulations.
On this occasion, at the Electric Crew Lobby located in Gonda, detailed information regarding safe shunting operations—specifically under General and Subsidiary Rule 5.13—was provided to approximately 50 Loco Pilots, Assistant Loco Pilots, and Shunters. Employees were sensitized on the proper observance of signals during shunting, the verification that routes and points are correctly set and locked, ensuring Brake Pipe (BP) pressure in the load, and strictly adhering to the instructions outlined in Form T/806. Furthermore, strict instructions were issued to refrain from using mobile phones while on duty. Safety-related posters and pamphlets were distributed to the employees to encourage them to perform their duties with vigilance and a sense of responsibility.
Continuing this initiative, a Safety Seminar was held at the Joint Office, attended by approximately 70 shunting staff members. During this session, Safety Officers and Safety Advisors engaged in detailed discussions regarding the importance of eliminating human error, adhering to safety regulations, maintaining effective communication systems, and exercising vigilance. Employees were encouraged to practically adopt the principle: "Think First, Check Next, Act Thereafter and Finally Confirm." Additionally, special emphasis was laid on the correct usage of prescribed hand signals and communication systems during shunting operations, preventing the entry of unauthorized persons into the yard, strictly adhering to prescribed speed limits, and performing duties with discipline and a strong sense of responsibility. In this context, as part of the safety awareness campaign, special safety counseling sessions were conducted for supervisors, keymen, and trackmen belonging to the Goods Examination Yard, Rolling Stock, and Engineering Departments. Safety personnel were briefed on the importance of working cautiously and safely during the summer season, as well as on adopting necessary safety protocols while working on goods lines, sick lines, during 'rolling-in' and 'rolling-out' examinations, and during general yard operations. Furthermore, they were advised to ensure adequate rest, maintain their mental and physical fitness, and adopt measures for stress management.
During the safety campaign, all employees were called upon to ensure safe railway operations by maintaining complete vigilance and alertness regarding their respective duties. Safety pamphlets were also distributed to raise awareness among all staff members.
