Key findings from Longitudinal Ageing Study in India - LASI wave 1 : Results from self-reports of chronic diseases with diagnosis highlight the high prevalence rates of CVDs, diabetes, lung diseases, musculoskeletal diseases, vision impairments, hearing problems, and mental health disorders among the older adult population in India.

These results confirm the estimates from the Global Burden of Disease Study (ISDBS 2017), several regionally focused studies (Mote 2016), and the rising burden of NCDs in India. The LASI results also support the fi ndings of previous studies that Indiaโ€™s escalating burden of NCD are contributed by the large burden of behavioral, metabolic, biological, and environmental risk factors (WHO 2021; ISDBS 2017). These are preventable and modifiable risk factors that include physical inactivity, to***co and alcohol use, high-risk BMI, high-risk waistโ€“hip ratio, raised blood pressure, and high cholesterol in addition to indoor and ambient air pollution (WHO 2021).
