Episode 6: Technology - Bane or Boon for Democracy? https://hubhopper.com/podcast/democracy-rules/404438

In this episode, we’ll explore how the intersection of gender and technology is a space of both greater empowerment and greater vulnerability. Nishtha Satyam, our guest for this episode, will share her experience with technology, the larger problems that women have when interacting with technology, how misinformation impairs politics and democracy, and more.

Nishtha is the current head of office for Timor-Leste in UN Women, the entity of the United Nations that is dedicated to working toward gender equality and women's empowerment. She was the former deputy country representative for the UN Women in India and the youngest woman to head a country office in the UN Women amongst 193 countries. Nishtha is an unapologetic feminist, a trained economist with a keen interest in applied macroeconomics and fiscal policy. She's a loud advocate of the urgency to mainstream women across the marketplace, workplace, and community.

Americans on the importance of Thanksgiving

Here’s an interesting fact about giving thanks on Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is still a day for us to show gratitude for what we have and to share our bounty with others. In many U.S. cities, volunteers prepare and serve Thanksgiving dinner to the destitute, and churches, mosques, temples and other religious centers host interfaith celebrations. Unlike some U.S. holidays, Thanksgiving is not tied to a single religious tradition, which makes it easier for people of different faiths to celebrate together, according to Christina Warner of the Shoulder-to-Shoulder Campaign, a nonprofit organization dedicated to interfaith understanding. “Breaking bread together is a fundamental way in which people of different faiths get to know each other,” Warner said. Watch this video on the importance of Thanksgiving:

Americans explain why they think Thanksgiving is important.

Are you an educator looking for avenues to use theater and drama in the classroom? Would you like to foster students’ creativity, critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills? American Center New Delhi, in collaboration with The Kutumb Foundation, invites you to a two-day workshop on the topic "Drama-in-Education (DiE): Unpacking Drama Conventions With Educators", from Nov 21st-22nd, 2022.

In this workshop, we will learn about avenues for using theater and drama in the classroom and drama-in-education pedagogy, thereby energizing the classroom. The aim is to create a space that is safe for participants to approach a problem as ‘wholly’ and as ‘unselfconsciously’ as possible. Drama achieves this by creating the ‘big lie’ for the participants and facilitators/teachers to step in and navigate that space together, and in the process the academic objectives of the classroom get addressed ‘sideways’. This workshop is for school teachers, university professors, educators, and facilitators who want to learn how to apply these conventions in their work with students.

Agenda:
Nov 21st , 6 pm-7 pm
Plenary Discussion with Dr. Kevin Cordi, Kapil Pandey, and Manjima Chatterjee
The plenary will focus on discussing the importance of Drama-in-Education and unpacking DiE best practices from India and the U.S.A.

Nov 22nd , 4:30 pm-7:30 pm
Drama-in-Education Workshop, facilitated by Kapil Pandey, and Manjima Chatterjee
The workshop will use group exercises to help equip educators with the tools and techniques they need in order to apply drama conventions in their classrooms and educational spaces. Participants will be awarded a certificate of participation.

We have curated these sessions with the following DiE practitioners from India and the U.S.A.:
Dr. Kevin Cordi (Ohio, U.S.A.): Dr. Cordi holds a doctorate in Storytelling and Education (Drama, Literature, Reading, Language, and Culture) from The Ohio State University. He teaches literacy and education classes at Ohio University Lancaster where he serves as the Middle Childhood Coordinator. He currently serves on the National Advisory Board for Teaching Tolerance with the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Chair for Storytelling for the National Council Teachers of English. His major research interests include content and disciplinary literacy, equity education, narrative pedagogy, and The Currere Method.

Kapil Pandey (India): Kapil Pandey is the president of The Kutumb Foundation, a nonprofit that uses performing arts & sports to engage with language and holistic learning.
He is a children's writer, a storyteller and a drama-in-education practitioner. He believes that drama is a very powerful tool to create safe and reflective learning spaces in a classroom. For a living, he uses the design thinking approach to design user experiences. Kapil has been training primary and middle school teachers across India in the art of using drama as a tool for learning.

Manjima Chatterjee (India): She is a drama explorer, educator and occasional writer. She has won The Hindu Metro Plus Playwright Award in 2013. She is also co-founder and General Secretary of The Kutumb Foundation. Manjima teaches drama and has served as the head of the Arts program at Shiv Nadar School in Noida. She is currently the Vice-Principal of Shiv Nadar School in Noida.

It’s almost Thanksgiving, and today we are talking about one major aspect of the holiday, helping those in need. Observed by us on the fourth Thursday in November, Thanksgiving celebrates life’s bounty. We traditionally mark it by gathering for a meal of turkey, vegetables, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. Many of us also cook meals at soup kitchens, donate or collect food for pantries that feed the poor and distribute other basic supplies to those in need. Read more about this tradition in this share America article. https://share.america.gov/at-thanksgiving-americans-reach-out-to-those-in-need/

It’s that time of the year when we get together to give thanks on a significant day in their culture, Thanksgiving Day. But did you know that this day is more than just eating roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, cornbread, and cranberry sauce? Here are some other ways we celebrate this holiday.
• Helping those in need.
• Giving thanks for what we are grateful for.
• Participating in a “turkey trot” race or fun run
• Watching a Thanksgiving parade or football game.

This week, we will be giving you a little more information about each of these traditions so you can take part in the festivities too! Which tradition do you want to learn about first? Tell us in the comment section.
