It’s known as one of Delhi University’s premier institutions, ranked 14 for colleges under the Government’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). But this year, Hansraj College’s bio has a unique addition that has already sparked a buzz — a cow protection and research centre. Called Swami Dayanand Saraswati Gau-Samwardhan ewam Anusandhan Kendra, the centre has been started with one cow and, according to principal Dr Rama, will be expanded “if the research that is done proves to be useful and beneficial”. According to the principal, the centre will not just do “research on various aspects of the cow”. It will also provide “pure milk and ghee” for the students, and for the monthly “havan” (prayer ritual) conducted on the campus, she said. “Ours is a DAV Trust college, and its base is the Arya Samaj. In line with that tradition, we hold a havan on the first day of every month, which may be attended by all teaching and non-teaching staff and students. During that (havan), we felicitate all the people who have their birthdays that month. For this, every month, we need to go to the market to buy the things that we need to offer to the flame, such as pure ghee. We can be self-sufficient now in this,” she said. Currently, the cow centre is an enclosure located by the college gate for the men’s hostel. But there’s more to come. The principal says the college is working on a gobar gas plant, which can be supported by the centre. “Apart from this, we can do research on various aspects of the cow. Another idea is that when the hostel opens, there can be pure milk and pure curd for the students,” she said. The Hansraj College unit of the CPI(M)’s Students’ Federation of India (SFI) has alleged that the cow centre has been set up on land earmarked for a women’s hostel — the college currently has only a men’s hostel. “SFI Hansraj unconditionally condemn and protest the construction of a GauShala…at the very site whi

Delhi 31 Jan : - Scores of students held a protest outside Delhi University's Hansraj College against the setting up of a cow protection and research centre inside the campus and demanded the construction of a women's hostel there. The Students' Federation of India (SFI) unit of Hansraj College has been alleging that a ''gaushala'' -- Swami Dayanand Cow-Protection and Research Centre has been constructed at the site reserved for a women's hostel. College principal Rama Sharma has said that they have only kept a single cow at the centre and it is for research purposes. She has also said that the area where the cow research centre has been built is a setback area and no hostel can be constructed there. The protest was called by SFI. Other student bodies also supported their protest. The students held the protest outside the college and carried placards - ''Save Public Education'', ''Prioritise Student Welfare'', ''No to Saffronisation of Education'' and ''We reclaim out campus''. Raising slogans, the students said the construction of a 'gaushala' will not be tolerated and demanded the construction of a women's hostel there.

Ganderbal: Dairy farmers from Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district incur losses due to the influx of ‘Pasteurized Milk’ in the markets. On Saturday, dairy farmers were seen emptying their milk canes on the ground in Lar area of the district after they failed to sell it in the market. Some of the affected farmers say that people don’t buy milk from them anymore as they prefer packed milk. “We don’t know the reason behind all this, but what we have observed is that scores of vehicles from outside enter into markets and supply the packed milk to shopkeepers,” said one of the dairy farmers. An elderly woman who runs a dairy farm told news agency Kashmir News Trust that she is not mulling to sell her cows as she is unable to sell the milk. “I can’t feed my cows anymore as it involves a lot of expenditure,” she said. The milk producers of the district alleged that authorities didn’t respond despite taking up the matter with them. “We had gone to meet to DC Ganderbal who told us to get in touch with ADC but ADC concerned never met us and we left his office with gloomy faces,” they said. They said that milk is being produced as usual but the people (consumers) who used to buy from us now prefer packed milk from markets. Some dairy farmers who sell open milk are often being accused of selling adulterated milk to consumers, as a result, they have lost credibility among people. On the, other hand milk-producing companies claim that Pasteurized Milk meets the PFA (Prevention of Food Adulteration Act) standards which aim to protect the public from poisonous and harmful foods, prevent the sale of substandard foods, and protect the interests of the consumers by eliminating fraudulent practices. There are many milk manufacturing companies in Kashmir that supply their pasteurized milk in pouch-packed to make it conveniently available to the consumers.
