Dear Brothers and Sisters,
I`m honoured to be here amongst all the very well established and respectable social workers. Born, brought up and currently living at Perinthalmanna – Malappuram Dist of Kerala. Married, living with husband, two children and parents. Like many others I started my social work in a very small way six years ago as a volunteer/coordinator with the Government of Kerala i
n some social Development projects as a CDS (Community Development Society) of Kudumbashree, ME (Micro Enterprise) Convener etc under the guidelines of Perinthalmanna Municipality and Angadipuram Panchayath. This was the platform for me to meet the needy in my neighbourhood. My views towards the society had to be largely challenged and changed to meet the needs of these woman. I gradually began to understand and help woman psychologically and financially. This went a long way in building the confidence of these woman who today can support themselves and lead a respectable life. My first experience as a full time Volunteer was with “Swanthanam”, A Society run by Perinthalmanna Municipality, for Paraplegic patients. Swanthanam conducts 10 days annual camp for paraplegic patients, which is a big event of this kind in Kerala. In the last camp nearly 158 Paraplegic patients were given free medical treatment, food, wheel chair, and other equipment’s. They were also trained on making of umbrellas, candle, cloth bag, CFL light etc. This was done on the principle of giving them confidence and overlooking their disability. Today many have stared in each of their stream by working on their skills.
“Swanthanam” wanted to build a clinic for paraplegic patients for a long time and now with all our collective efforts we have built a Clinic with 10 beds and basic infrastructure near Tharayil Bus Stand at Perinthalmanna. It is to be inaugurate shortly. We are also planning to set up a permanent shelter and work place for these patients and are on the lookout for land. I am also a trained palliative care volnteer who takes interest in treating the symptoms, side effects, and emotional problems experienced by the patients. My main goal is to maintain the best possible quality of life for these patients. I am part of a Facebook group called "Mathrukam" where I am the elected Treasurer since its origin. We started its services by celebrating ONAM with mentally and physically re****ed children. For the past two years we support an old age home, in Perinthalmanna, by donating a fixed amount monthly for their food and other expenses. We also help Hellen Keller School for Blind with “ONAKODI”, Onasadhya, school furniture and other needs as and when needed. Recently we also bought four cent land for a student of this school, whose name is Neeraja, we are now working on building a house for her on the land. I am also a Trustee of PEACE CHARITABLE TRUST, which is currently running a Teaching Program for underprivileged students in Slums, Orphanages, etc. We also paid school fee for a lot of under privileged students. Supported Mrs Jainy with more than a lakh rupee for her operation. Helped a girl for her wedding (with basic gold ornaments, expenses) etc. We gave away more than 250 Ramzan kits recently (each kit at the cost of Rs.2000) In June of 2015, we supported more than 100 Kids with School Kit worth 800 each. Celebrated Id-ul-fitr with people who live in nearby Old age home, served food and also provided new clothes for few poor people who live nearby. Got an electric wheel chair worth 1.8 Lakh for a paraplegic patient
Today I support and work with various charity organisations like Darusalam Destitute Care Home, Hellen Keller Blind School,“Swanthanam” Society for Paraplegics, Orphanages, small scale industries run by woman, “Mathrukam” Service Society, PEACE Charitable Trust and numerous online groups as an online campaigner, coordinator , fund raiser , onsite volunteer , Treasurer , Trustee etc
In 2015 January, I was selected as a Best Social worker and awarded by the Perinthalmanna Municipality. My main goal is to serve the needy and I will do everything possible to help them in all forms to get them out of their misery. All I am doing at this time is being a bridge between the needy and the helpful heart. And this mission has been possible because of people who are willing to work beyond their horizons of Caste, religion, creed or political ideologies. I wish this crusade finds many more helping hands because there are more mouths that needs to be fed than we can imagine. This is my way of giving back to the society which has always stood by me, appreciated me and encouraged me to break all the barriers that could possibly be laid for a woman. I really want to thank my well-wishers without whose support none of this would have been possible, mainly my friends from GCC
Thank you for your interest in my work. Thanks and Regards
Mrs Seena Shanabvas
