— KNOW YOUR HAZARD TYPE
Not every building has the same level of fire risk. Understanding the hazard classification is an important step toward effective fire prevention and emergency preparedness.

✅Key Selection Criteria
The hazard type can be assessed using parameters such as:
✔️Height of Building
✔️Number of Occupants
✔️Building Surface Area
✔️Flammable Gas Quantity
✔️Flammable Liquid Quantity
✔️Combustible Liquid Quantity
The criteria help identify whether a building falls under Low, Moderate or High Hazard categories.

✅ Reference: Annex B, IS 2190

👉 SAFETY STARTS WITH RISK AWARENESS
Identify the hazard. Assess the risk. Take preventive action.

🧯

A fire extinguisher is a critical life-safety device—but like any safety equipment, it has a defined service life and must be properly inspected, maintained, and tested.

✅Typical service life as per IS 2190:2024, Annexure G:
✔️ Water-Based — 10 Years
✔️Foam-Based — 10 Years
✔️Dry Powder-Based — 10 Years
✔️Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) — 15 Years
✔️Clean Agent — 10 Years

⚠️ Important Safety Notes:
✔️ Service life is considered from the date of manufacture.
✔️ If an extinguisher fails hydrostatic pressure testing, it should be discarded immediately and replaced with a similar type and fire rating.
✔️ Regular inspection, maintenance and timely replacement are essential for reliable fire protection.

✅Don't wait for a fire to discover an expired extinguisher.

& Safety (OH&S) Systems

A strong Occupational Health & Safety Management ((OH&S) System is the foundation for preventing accidents, protecting workers, and building a positive safety culture.

✅Key areas to examine include:
A-1 | OH&S Management
A-2 | Physical Hazards
A-3 | Chemical Hazards
A-4 | Fire & Explosion Hazards
A-5 | Industrial Hygiene / Occupational Health
A-6 | Accident / Incident Management
A-7 | Emergency Preparedness
A-8 | Safety Inspection

– Records to be Examined

A successful Safety Audit is not only about workplace inspections—it also requires a thorough review of documented records and evidence.

👉Key records may include:
✅ OH&S Policy & Safety Organization Chart
✅ Training & Competency Records
✅ Plant Safety Inspection Records
✅ Accident, Incident & Near-Miss Investigation Reports
✅ SOPs & Work Permit Records
✅ Emergency Plans & Mock Drill Records
✅ Fire Safety Inspection & Maintenance Records
✅ Industrial Hygiene & Environmental Monitoring Records
✅ MSDS/SDS & Hazardous Waste Records
✅ Statutory Licences, Approvals & Inspection Records
✅ Maintenance, Testing & Calibration Records
✅ Previous Audit Reports & Safety Analysis
✅ PPE Issue Records
✅ Waste Management & Disposal Records
✅ Records of Plant Modifications & Shutdown Maintenance

✔️ Reference: Annex B, IS 14489:2018

Good records provide evidence. Good audits drive improvement. Good safety systems prevent accidents.

Note: Types of Record can vary as per nature of organization, activities and applicable rules, Regulations, codes & standards.

🫁

Asbestosis is a serious, chronic lung disease caused by prolonged inhalation of asbestos fibres. The fibres can become trapped in the lungs, causing inflammation and permanent scarring (fibrosis), which can progressively reduce lung function.

✅Common Symptoms
✔️Shortness of breath
✔️Persistent dry cough
✔️Chest discomfort
✔️Fatigue and reduced exercise tolerance
✔️In advanced cases, severe breathing difficulty

✅Who May Be at Risk?
Workers (Person) involved in:
✔️Construction, demolition & renovation
✔️Asbestos removal and maintenance
✔️Manufacturing of asbestos-containing materials
✔️Shipbuilding and shipbreaking
✔️Handling asbestos-contaminated waste etc.

✅Control measures l Prevention is the Best Protection
✔️Avoid disturbing asbestos-containing materials
✔️Identify and assess asbestos before maintenance or demolition work
✔️Use competent, trained personnel for asbestos removal
✔️Implement appropriate engineering controls and respiratory protection
✔️Follow applicable regulations and safe-work procedures
✔️Conduct appropriate health surveillance for exposed workers

👉Remember: There is no known safe level of asbestos exposure. All forms of asbestos are carcinogenic and can cause asbestosis, mesothelioma and other cancers. Preventing exposure is the most effective way to prevent asbestos-related diseases.

✅FTA vs ETA — Know the Difference! ⚠️🔍

Understanding Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) and Event Tree Analysis (ETA) is essential for effective risk assessment and accident prevention.

✅👉FTA – Fault Tree Analysis
A deductive, top-down approach used to identify the possible causes leading to an undesired Top Event.

✅ETA – Event Tree Analysis
An inductive, forward-looking approach used to evaluate possible consequences following an Initiating Event.

📌 FTA: Cause → Top Event
📌 ETA: Initiating Event → Consequences

Both techniques support hazard identification, risk assessment, safety system evaluation, and accident prevention.

HAZOP Study

✅HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Study) is a systematic, team-based technique used to identify hazards, operational problems, causes, consequences, and deviations from design intent.

✅Key Guide Words:
NO/NOT • MORE • LESS • AS WELL AS • PART OF • REVERSE • OTHER THAN

👉HAZOP helps to:
✅ Identify process hazards and deviations
✅ Assess potential consequences and risks
✅ Review existing safeguards
✅ Recommend risk-reduction measures
✅ Improve process safety, reliability and operability

✅Typical HAZOP Study Flow:
Design Intent → Select Node → Apply Guide Word → Identify Deviation → Causes → Consequences → Safeguards → Recommendations

✅Examples
Guide Word: No
Parameter: Flow
Deviation: No Flow

Guide Word: More
Parameter: Pressure
Deviation: High Pressure

Guide Word: Less
Parameter: Temperature
Deviation: Low Temperature

Guide Word: Reverse
Parameter: Flow
Deviation: Reverse Flow

Guide Word: More
Parameter: Level
Deviation: High Level

✅ Remember:
Guide Word + Parameter = Deviation

Note: Please follow the standard methodology for conducting a HAZOP study and always use the standard HAZOP format. In the Deviation section, general terms are used only for understanding and illustration. During the actual HAZOP study, identify specific potential deviations relevant to the process parameters and applicable guide words.

👉A well-conducted HAZOP can help prevent process incidents before they happen.
