Till 1869 when the district of Jalpaiguri was formed this area was administered from Rangpur district(now in Bangladesh) After the annexation of the Duars in 1864 they were divided into Eastern and Western Duars the former is part of the district Goalpara(Assam). The western duars was divided into 3 Tehsils, viz 1) Sadar comprising the area between Tista and Torsa rivers with head-quarters at Main

aguri, 2) Buxa tehsil, the areas from Torsa to Sankos with its head-quarters at Alipurduars and 3) Dalingkot tehsil which included the mountainous part of the territory. Tweedie who was first Deputy Commissioner of Western Dooars. In 1867 Dalingkot tehsil was transferred to Darjeeling and the criminal jurisdiction of Tentulia sub-division of Rangpur comprising the Police Circles of Boda and Sanyasikata(Now Rajganj) and Fakirgan(Now Jalpaiguri) was made over to Western Dooars. In 1867-68 Buxa was formed into regular sub-division. In 1869 Tetulia sub-division was separated completely from Rangpur and was united to the Western Dooars to form the district of Jalpaiguri. The Deputy Commissioner removed his headquarters from Maynaguri to Jalpaigui town. The district was divided into two sub-divisions the Sadar and the Falakata sub-division. In 1874-75 Patgram was attached to the Sadar sub-division and Jalpaiguri district remained so till 1947. At the eve of independence there were 17 Police Stations in Jalpaiguri district.

Today, 31st May 2026, under the “Pratyarpan” Programme at Banarhat PS under Jalpaiguri District Police, successfully returned 42 recovered missing/lost mobile phones and ₹35,200 recovered in cyber fraud cases to their rightful owners after proper verification.

The programme was graced by the presence of Shri Uttam Ghosh, Addl. SP (Rural), Jalpaiguri; Shri Arindam Pal Choudhury, SDPO Dhupguri; Shri Puna Bhengra, Hon’ble MLA, Nagrakata AC; Shri Naresh Roy, Hon’ble MLA, Dhupguri AC; along with other distinguished members of the community.

🚨 Crackdown on Illicit Liquor by Jalpaiguri District Police 🚨

As part of its continuous drive against illegal activities, the police team of Matelli PS under Jalpaiguri District Police conducted a special raid on 31.05.2026 in the Matelli Bazar and Chalsa areas under Matelli Police Station.

During the operation, police detected and destroyed approximately 40 kg of fermented wash and 12 litres of illicit liquor, preventing the production and distribution of illegal alcohol in the area.

⚠️ Beware of Illicit Liquor Consumption of illicit liquor can lead to serious health hazards, including poisoning, permanent disability, and even death. It also fuels criminal activities and poses a threat to public safety.

🔴 Blind Faith Can Cost You Dearly – Stay Alert, Stay Safe! 🔴

A woman from Rajganj fell victim to a fraudster who introduced himself as a "Kabiraj" and claimed he could solve family and mental problems through special rituals. Gaining her trust, he convinced her to hand over gold ornaments, silver anklets, and cash for a so-called healing process. Taking advantage of the situation, he fled with the valuables.

🚔 Acting promptly on the complaint, Rajganj Police launched an investigation, arrested the accused, and recovered the stolen property from his residence following a raid.

• Gold bangles
• Silver anklets
• Cash amount

🚨 House Burglary Case Solved – Stolen Gold Ornaments Recovered 🚨

On 18.05.2026, a written complaint was received from Shri Debojit Das of Sariam, P.S. Rajganj, stating that unknown miscreants had committed theft in his residence during daytime and stolen gold ornaments weighing approximately 23.250 grams from an almirah.

Accordingly, Rajganj P.S. Case No. 171/2026 dated 18.05.2026 u/s 305 BNS was registered and investigation was taken up immediately. During the course of investigation, the I.O. arrested one accused, Biswajit Ghosh of Bara Atiabari, P.S. Dinhata, District Cooch Behar, and obtained police custody for further interrogation.

Through sustained investigation, a gold necklace and a gold earring, previously seized in another burglary case under Bhaktinagar P.S., were identified as the stolen property of the present case. After obtaining due permission, the recovered ornaments were re-seized in connection with the Rajganj P.S. case.
