Ancient Medicine: The Birth of Healing, By Dinya Nazeer
1. The origins of medicine trace back to humanity’s earliest attempts to understand disease and the human body. In ancient history, illness was often attributed to supernatural or spiritual causes rather than purely biological ones. Even without formal science, early healers carefully watched and learned which remedies worked, slowly separating helpful treatments from superstition. This helped set the stage for modern medical science.
2. Healing methods relied primarily on natural substances. Plants, minerals, and animal-derived products were used to treat pain, fever, wounds, and infection. Over time, people discovered that some of these treatments had consistent, reliable effects. Archaeological findings also confirm that surgical procedures were performed thousands of years ago. Evidence of trepanation, fracture reduction, and wound suturing reflect an early understanding of anatomy and attempts at operative care.
3. Alongside these medical practices, early societies also established ethical principles to guide healers. The infamous quote “Primum non nocere” which means “First, do no harm” reflects this early commitment to patient safety and professional responsibility. This concept became the cornerstone of medical ethics and continues to influence the physician’s moral and professional code to this day.
