With the proposed redevelopment of Fort Regent, now is the perfect time for the Government to approach the UK and the now owner of this sacred Jersey dolmen and work with them to bring it back to the island, reinstating it where it so rightfully belongs.

Listen now (8 min) | Jersey is an Island of ghosts. I speak not of the men and women who have lived and died here over the tumultuous centuries, but of the great landmarks that have stood here and fallen. With the proposed redevelopment of Fort Regent, now is the perfect time for the Government to approach the UK and the now owner of this sacred Jersey dolmen and work with them to bring it back to the island, reinstating it on top of Le Mont de la Ville, where it so rightfully belongs.

This megalithic monument was discovered in 1785 when part of Le Mont de la Ville was levelled to make way for a parade ground. It was given to the retiring governor, Field-Marshal Henry Seymour Conway, who placed it in the grounds of his property in Henley-on-Thames in 1787.

The Political Oversight Group of Fort Regent already has pre-feasibility funding for ‘Botanical Gardens and Heritage’ and the 'Future Fort Regent' vision has a proposed Heritage Trail aimed to reinterpret the early history of the Fort. Why not go even further back into our rich history and reinstate the magnificent dolmen that sat on top of the hill for over 5000 years?

We are blessed to have so many beautiful dolmens on the island. Bringing this gem back to Jersey will not only enhance the proposed plans, adding further tourist attraction and economic benefits, but it will also bring balance, beauty and authenticity back to the site where it so rightfully belongs.

Can we work together as an island and bring home this missing jewel in our crown?
