The Rise of Andrew’s Authoritarianism: How the Jamaican Labour Party became a Criminal Organisation

In 2013, the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) was embroiled in a contentious leadership race between then leader Andrew and Deputy Leader Audley Shaw, setting the stage for a bitter internal contest that raised serious concerns about the future within the party.

Central to the controversy was Andrew’s decision to withhold the party’s Strategic Review Report from most delegates until after the leadership vote. This move raised red flags sparking allegation of deliberate undermining, transparency and accountability at a critical time. Delegates were coerced to vote without access to vital party information suppressed by Andrew, a tactic widely viewed as manipulative.

The leadership election, held in November 2013, resulted in Holness defeating Shaw. However, the outcome was overshadowed by widespread reports of unethical campaign practices, including voter suppression, intimidation and vote buying, with delegates claiming they were threatened with political consequences if they supported Shaw.

Political commentators and journalists reported instances of voter suppression with some delegates stating off the record that they felt pressured to vote in certain ways or risk losing future nominations and party support. Shaw and his supporters accused Holness’ camp of leveraging promises of appointments and political favors to secure loyalty in a bid to remove senators critical of Andrew’s leadership, including threats to delegates

12 Years Later the Pattern Continues

Though the events unfolded in 2013, the same modus operandi persist 12 years later with Andrew and his appointed allies quietly rigging the election and rushing through questionable appointments to serve and protect his ongoing corruption, now into third consecutive term.

Paul Buchanan of the People’s National Party, representing St Andrew West Central has publicly challenged the legitimacy of the September 3, 2025 general election results in his constituency. He cited incidents of violence, police intimidation, monetary voter suppression and vote buying all of which constitute breaches of the Representation of the People’s Act.

Recently Buchanan continues to be intimidated and harassed in particular calls from senior police command including a Deputy Commissioner and an Assistant Commissioner pressuring Buchanan to disclose witness information related to election day breaches, no doubt under the instruction of the “honourable” Andrew 1PM forever.

These patterns of political intimidation, vote manipulation, and institutional complicity, reflects a disturbing erosion of Jamaica’s democratic foundation. If law enforcement officials are used to protect political power rather than uphold justice, what hope is left for accountability?

Jamaicans must ask themselves, how much longer can we accept leadership that thrives on fear, silence and corruption?

Why Mark Golding Refused to Stand and Why Jamaicans Should be Paying Attention

Mark Golding was recently criticised for remaining seated during Andrew’s swearing in. Biased media outlets, paid bloggers, and JLP aligned influencers were quickly mobilised to twist the narrative, painting Golding’s silent protest as disrespectful while casting Holness as a strong, honourable transformative leader of Jamaica.

Golding’s refusal to stand was an act of political courage, a symbolic rejection of the rot that has infected Jamaica. It is even more significant given the ongoing court challenges, particularly in West Central St. Andrew, where serious allegations of electoral fraud have been brought forward.

Recently JLP loyalist and self-proclaimed “Boss of the Universe” hosted a White Party, proudly celebrating one special guest of honour, his friend Andrew. Andrew arrived in full celebration mode, accompanied by MP Donovan Williams of Central Kingston a man whose victory remains clouded in controversy.

On election night, preliminary results showed the PNP’s Steve McGregor ahead by 12 votes. However, following the official count, Williams was suddenly declared the winner with 4832 to McGregor’s 4753. This dramatic vote swing raised serious questions about the integrity of the counting process where the margin flipped overnight without clear public explanation.

The symbolic abstention of Mark Golding’s act served as a reminder to the Jamaican people that you do not stand, applaud, or celebrate a man, whose administration is entrenched in corruption, and handpicks questionable figures solely to protect his grip on power.

Rather than attack Golding, the question should be asked: why is corruption normalised and why should anyone show respect to a system that has failed the people it was meant to serve?

Banana Republic: Consolidated Power In Plain Sight

In plain sight, Jamaicans have watched as Andrew once again evades accountability for corruption and election manipulation.

During his recent swearing in speech, he publicly insulted the People’s National Party with a condescending gesture of “unity and cooperation” while quietly appointing corrupt individuals widely viewed as complicit in enabling his corruption.

One of the most blatant example is appointing his wife as Speaker of the House, the very person responsible for ensuring fairness and impartiality in parliament.

This move reflects a deeper strategy to consolidate his power, silence dissent and protect his administration from scrutiny. This glaring contradiction exposes a troubling pattern of political theatre designed to maintain power while quietly undermining true democratic reform.

Jamaica ranks 73rd out of 180 countries on Transparency International’s 2024 Corruption Perceptions Index, a clear sign that corruption is not only persistent but deeply entrenched in our institutions. This impacts on public services, economic opportunity, justice and the daily lives of every Jamaican.

That’s why we are calling on Jamaicans and the Jamaican diaspora, and allies across the U.S, Canada, the U.K and beyond, to stand with us.

Use your voice and help up bring international pressure to use the Magnitsky Act to sanction corrupt officials and human rights violators in Jamaica. We are calling on the Jamaican Diaspora far and wide to Sign and Share this Petition. We’re calling on the U.S, Canada, UK and others to use the Magnitsky Act to sanction corrupt officials and human rights violators in Jamaica.

So that every Jamaican deserves to live in a country governed by integrity not impunity.

We urge you to sign and share the petititon below

Corruption Enabling Appointments: The Quiet Political Return of Andrew Wheatley

In 2018, Andrew Wheatley resigned under a cloud of corruption scandal and quietly reinstated to power in 2025.

Jamaica’s state-owned oil refinery Petrojam was at the centre of one of the country’s most high profile corruption scandals. Under the oversight of Andrew Wheatley, the organisation became a symbol of state capture. Financial irregularities, mismanagement and politically motivated appointments plagued the institution.

The Integrity Commission later revealed that several individuals were strategically appointed to the Petrojam board. These board members were later involved in key HR decisions and the approval of controversial donations, raising alarm bells about a corruption enabling network under ministerial direction.

Among the most troubling findings was the appointment of a “former assistant”. In truth, she was the mother of his nephew, a connection Wheatley failed to disclose. Her position, along with others, helped create a triangle of influence between HR leadership, board governance and political decision makers.

The Integrity Commission raised serious concerns about politically influenced donations, lack of oversight mechanisms and dubious board appointments, all pointing back to systemic failures under Wheatley’s ministerial watch.

In 2020, Wheatley sued the Integrity Commission in the Supreme Court, but the case was dismissed. The court affirmed that the Commission was within its rights to describe Wheatley’s conduct as dishonest and misleading.

Despite these findings and zero accountability, Wheatley was quietly reinstated by Andrew Holness to oversee special projects without public vetting or transparency.

Internet Outage and Suspicious Vote Counts: How Andrew and the JLP Stole the Election in Plain Sight

Andrew Holness, a protégé of Edward Seaga, a JLP leader (who was linked to the CIA) has openly expressed his admiration for Benjamin Netanyahu. Andrew described Israel as one of the leading nations in the world in cybersecurity, surveillance and counter intelligence. In an unprecedented move, he visited Israel in 2017 and met with Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss cyber surveillance and counter intelligence, including another visit in 2022 led by Daryl Vaz to discuss cyber intelligence and cyber security.

The Pegasus Spyware and Andrew’s Authoritarian Inclination

Developed by the Israel’s NSO Group, Pegasus, is one of the most advanced and covert spyware tools, capable of infiltrating, phones, intercept calls and emails, track location and even activate cameras and microphones without the user’s knowledge. Pegasus has been linked to surveillance abuses in multiple countries, including authoritarian regimes. Spyware like Pegasus can be installed on journalists or broadcasters’ smartphones and computers, allowing attackers to monitor ongoing live broadcasts, interfere with WhatsApp communications and remotely disable or slow down devices during critical reporting windows. Attackers may also deploy malware to cause device crashes or interruptions, preventing smooth live streaming and disrupting the flow of information.

September 3, 2025

During the recent election night broadcast by Dionne Jackson, thousands of Jamaicans tuned in to receive live updates on poll results across various constituencies. However, during the vote count in West Central St Andrew, the internet connection abruptly went down, halting live broadcasts and delaying result reporting, for approximately one and half hours. This created a substantial information blackout during a crucial reporting window.

When the connection resumed, the reported vote counts in the area prompted concerns about accuracy and irregularities. Given the importance of real time transparency in election results, such timing is highly suspicious suggesting deliberate interference. The blackout prevented media, observers and the public from verifying and scrutinising vote counts in real time. The absence of oversight during this period cast doubt on the integrity of the electoral process and created an opportunity for manipulation and tampering with the results. The vote counts reported after the internet outage revealed a stark and unexpected shift, with nearly 90 percent of the remaining ballots favouring Andrew of the Jamaica Labour Party.

A History of Documented Corruption

Given Andrew’s well-documented history of corruption and voter intimidation tactics, the outage timing, warrant a thorough investigation. Additionally, Andrew’s connections to Israeli expertise, including visits focused on advanced surveillance technologies, raises troubling questions about the potential misuse of cyber tools to influence election outcomes.

Could the targeted sabotage in West Central St. Andrew, have been orchestrated to deny Paul Buchanan’s victory, so that Andrew not only maintains his grip on power, but shields ongoing allegations of illicit enrichment, ensuring wealth and influence flow to himself, his wife and his inner circle of corrupt friends?

We urge the People’s National Party to throw their full support behind Comrade Paul Buchanan and mount a legal challenge that exposes any sabotage, corruption and abuse of power to undermine votes in West Central, St Andrew.

The Dangers of Political Conflicts in Electoral Oversight

Tavares-Finson is a senior figure in the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and commissioner on the Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ).

Tavares-Finson’s public defence of Andrew and the JLP’s election victory, while serving on the ECJ, blatantly undermines the commission’s neutrality and blurs the line between independent oversight and party loyalty, eroding public trust and weakening electoral integrity.

Even more troubling is Tavares-Finson’s outright dismissal of the People’s National Party’s legitimate concerns about corruption and election irregularities, concerns that deserve full and transparent investigation, not partisan deflection. This represents a clear and serious breach of impartiality.

Adding to the alarm is Glasspole Brown who has refused to reveal the Polling Division (PD) results for the September 3, 2025 General Election and remain missing from the ECJ’s official website. This lack of transparency raises a critical question: What is being hidden and why?

Rather than addressing these issues with transparency and objectively, he chooses to defend the status quo, risking the facilitation of election manipulation and undue political influence.

Tavares Finson should not be making public statements defending his party’s election victory while sitting as an ECJ commissioner.

It is imperative that we demand immediate reforms to remove political influence from the ECJ and call for an independent oversight, transparency, and full accountability to restore faith in our electoral system that serves the people not political parties.

This moment exposed the deepening erosion of accountability in Jamaica’s democracy.

In March 2024, Comrade Mark Golding was forced to continue his speech outside Gordon House after Andrew walked out of Parliament when challenge over his decision to appoint his wife Juliet as Speaker of the House.

This act signalled more than arrogance, it signalled a belief that he is above the scrutiny and untouchable.

There is an inherent conflict of interest when the person tasked with upholding parliamentary impartiality is the spouse of the head of government. This undermines public trust and raises urgent questions about whether the Speaker can act independently in safeguarding democratic norms.

We call on Comrade Mark Golding to continue defending our democratic institutions and to push for a full, independent, and transparent investigation into allegations of voter corruption and electoral misconduct.
