アーティスト・イン・レジデンス事業運営団体／茨城県

日本におけるAIRプログラムの草分けとして、1994年プレ事業として開始したアーティスト・イン・レジデンス団体です。これまで支援してきた、海外で活躍している歴代の招へいアーティストの情報をお知らせします。アーカススタジオは場所の名前。アーカス/ARCUSとはラテン語で「門」を意味します。アーティストの才能を発掘・支援し、国際舞台に送り出す登竜門となること、芸術活動の中心地（ARTxFOCUS）となることを願って名付けられています。
ARCUS Project “Residency for Artists, Experiments for Locals” aims to support promising artists who engage in creative activities across the world, and also, to promote the Ibaraki area through art. By collaborating with emerging artists, curators, and prospective art managers, ARCUS Project connects the Ibaraki area with art, and encourages residents of the city of Moriya to voluntarily participate in various art projects that include exhibitions, workshops, lectures, and film screenings.

アーカスプロジェクトは、全世界から芸術家を茨城県守谷市に迎え、作品づくりのための滞在と制作を支援するアーティスト・イン・レジデンス事業を軸に、国際的な文化交流と地域社会づくりを併せた事業です。1994年にはじまり、今年で33年目を迎えます。その間、芸術家の支援ほか、市民の発想力と創造性を育む公開講座やワークショップを実施し、地域社会がより生き生きとしたものになるよう努めております。

この30年の間に、公的資金が縮減される一方で自助努力による財源の確保が求められる時代へと移り変わりました。当団体としても、知恵をしぼり、またこれまでに培った人的ネットワークを活用し、存続のために、社会状況や時代の変化に応じながら常に事業内容や方法の見直しを図っております。

[移転のお知らせ]

もりや学びの里を拠点にアーティスト・イン・レジデンス事業を行ってきたアーカスプロジェクトは、2026年9月10日より、守谷市立高野小学校敷地内へ移転いたします。

これまでの拠点であるもりや学びの里での活動は、30年以上にも及びました。 国内外から多くのアーティストや地域の方々、ボランティアのサポーターさん、友人達が訪れ、数えきえれないほどの思い出がこの場所には刻まれています。アーカスが大切にしてきた創造的な環境とアーティストへの支援を継承しながら、新しい拠点では、より地域社会へと開かれたプログラムを展開してゆきます。

また、移転に先立ち、もりや学びの里で最後のイベントとしてカジュアルな会を開きたいと思います。「アーカスにまだ行ったことがなかった」とか「もう一度アーカスを見ておきたい」など機会をうかがっていた方はぜひご参加ください。もりや学びの里に設置されている冨井大裕の彫刻作品の鑑賞ツアーも予定しております。この場所での思い出を振り返りながら、一緒に時間を過ごせたら嬉しいです🤍

After 32 years of operating its artist residency program at Moriya Manabi-no-Sato since 1994, ARCUS Project will relocate to a new home on the grounds of Koya Elementary School in Moriya City, effective September 10, 2026.

Moriya Manabi-no-Sato has been our home for over three decades. Countless artists, community members, volunteers, families, and friends from around the globe have walked through its doors, creating memories that have shaped ARCUS Project into what it is today. We will miss this place dearly.

As we begin this new chapter, we leave these studios behind, but we carry those memories with us. We are grateful to everyone who has visited, collaborated with us, or shared time at ARCUS over the years. Thank you for being part of our journey. While maintaining the creative environment and artist support that have always been at the heart of ARCUS, we look forward to developing programs that are even more open and engaged with the local community in our new home.

Before we move, we invite you to join us for a farewell and thank-you gathering as we say goodbye to Moriya Manabi-no-Sato after 32 memorable years. We hope you can join us.

We are now accepting applications for the ARCUS Research Winter residency program, which will take place from January 14 to February 25, 2027. The application deadline is June 2 - just 10 days away!

ARCUS Research is a self-funded, self-directed residency designed to offer uninterrupted time and a contemplative environment for creative experimentation, in-depth fieldwork, and research. The program welcomes not only artists but also curators, researchers, educators, writers, and other cultural practitioners who wish to deepen their creative inquiries.

Thank you very much for joining the Show & Tell session by Lena Bergendahl, Max Ockborn, Pedro Batista, and Emil Sandström, participants in ARCUS Research Winter🌕

Lena, who creates short films and video installations by combining fictitiou scenarios with documentary and archival material, focused on origami and kite in Japan, gathering material/footage for her new film. This exploration expanded, her gaze turning to diverse elements including satellites and the landscapes surrounding ARCUS Studio.

Max, who creates site-specific installations using sculpture, painting, and video, made a sculpture mixing various materials left behind by past artists at ARCUS, alongside natural materials sourced from the surrounding area.

Born in Lisbon, and raised in Carcavelos—an area vibrant with skateboarding and surfing culture—painter Pedro created drawings, oil paintings, and small objects. He explored how imagery can hold meaning beyond cultural boundaries, deepening his approach to painting as a dynamic, evolving process.

Emil, exploring how sound design and commercial ideology intertwine to reflect broader political imaginaries, continued his research into Kankyō Ongaku and histories of Japanese experimental music. For Show & Tell, he presented an experimental sound installation using the broadcasting system within the building, a former primary school.
