Last Monday the water at Ryori Beach looked almost perfectly blue, and the nearly clear stream cutting through this side of the beach added an ethereal effect to the already breathtaking coastline. During these hot summer days in Ofunato, it is places like this that offer not only an opportunity to relax and swim, but to do so within an absolutely beautiful environment.

This week I had the fortunate opportunity to explore much of Ofunato's coast, including a stop at the famous Dokonjō (Guts) Poplar Tree! Planted after the Sanriku Earthquake of 1933, the poplar was named after its gutsy resilience in the face of both the Chile Earthquake of 1960, as well as the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011, hence the name "Guts." In the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake, the tree serves as an awe-inspiring symbol of Ofunato's indomitable spirit that overlooks the reconstruction.

今週は大船渡の海岸をドライブする機会がありました！ドライブ中に、大船渡の有名な「ど根性ポプラ」で止まりました。昭和8年の三陸地震後に植えられたポプラの木は、昭和35年のチリ地震と平成23年の東日本大震災に耐えたことから、「ど根性」という名がつきました。東日本大震災後、この復興を見ている木は大船渡の負けじ心というすごい象徴になりました。

Hello!
I am the new Coordinator of International Relations (CIR) in Ofunato! I come from the east coast in America, so I am tremendously excited to experience the coastal life Ofunato offers and see how it differs or compares to my time growing up near the ocean and commercial fishing industries.

Ofunato--located in Iwate Prefecture in Northern Japan--has already taken my breath away with its stunning atmosphere and its unique position on the coast nestled between surrounding mountains. Pictured here is a view of the white waters clashing against rocks off the coast of Goishi, named for its its beach's pebbles resembling pieces from the traditional board game Go. I was particularly stunned by how perfectly the white waters seemingly "drained" from the rocks back into the ocean after the violent clash of waves, which I tried to capture in this photo.

Going forward, I am excited to explore photography in these posts through Ofunato's beautiful scenery and share my unique experiences as I live and work here!

Hello！
The Ofunato Summer festival is getting closer by the day and I’m excited for food and fireworks!
I hope y'all come join us for these festive days!
Don't forget its on the July 31(Friday) and August 1(Saturday)!
On July 31st, there is a parade and stage event along the many ports starting at 4:00pm.
On August 1st, there will be food stalls and fireworks, which will start at 3:30pm!
The venue for both days is "大船渡町茶屋前岸壁付近” (Near the Chayamae Wharf in Ofunato Town)

How are you!
I went to Ryuuka! The wonderful place with wonderful Mapo Tofu Ramen. I love spicy food and the mapo tofu is a good kind of spice that does not feel too spicy but has a lot of flavor!
Ah but a drop of the soup fell into my eye....... it was spicy soo.... and I was wearing contacts ...so....... I did my best not to terrify the other customers! I did not scream but I did pull on my hair! and used a lot of tissues and calmed down and continued to enjoy my ramen. Anyway, the moral of this story is, I couldn't stop eating the ramen even after it attacked me cuz it was soo good. The taste has been burned into my eyes!🫰🔥🔥🫰

こんにちは！お久ですね！
龍華（りゅうか）に行きました！龍華の麻婆豆腐はめっちゃおいしい！辛いけど辛すぎず、スパイスの風味も十分楽しめます！私は辛い食べ物がめっちゃ好きだからな！

でも、食べている途中でスープが一滴はねて目に入ってしまって、辛いスープだからね……痛かったです。ほかのお客さんの迷惑にならないように、叫ばずに必死で我慢してて、精一杯頑張って声を抑えて、ティッシュもたくさん使いました！
で、落ち着いてからラーメンを楽しんだ。
結論としては、ラーメンがおいしすぎたので、ラーメンに襲われても食べたい気持ちが勝ちました！その味は今でも目に焼き付いています.....🫰🔥🔥🫰

Hello！
Do you guys know what a galette is？
I sure don't. I have seen pastries called galettes and these flat kinda breads? called galette.
But I for one know something. Its french. 🫰😉
I went to a cute, fancy place called "Antenne"「アンテンヌ」. They make galettes and crepes! I ordered a shrimp avocado.... something galette! It tasted light and healthy. The crispy galette part actually tasted very similar to the Indian flat bread, "Dosa".
Inside the flat bread part there was a very thin layer of cheese. There were also leafy veggies and tomatoes. A tiny garden. A healthy garden. A light garden.
When you eat such a delicious light healthy garden.... You need something the total opposite of that to balance things out. So I chose hot chocolate. Hot Cocoa.
Now my dear subjects, in order to go find this tiny garden on a plate ...... follow this map. It will take you home......................🍃

ガレットって何なのかはわかる？
私は分からないな。お菓子屋に行った時もこの「ガレット」という名前のお菓子はあったし、今回の
「アンテンヌ」という店にもガレットありました。お菓子屋のガレットと形全然違ったけど。
とにかく、この間「アンテンヌ」に行きました！店内はなんかエレガントな感じでした！かわいくて静かで、周りのお客さんたちの微笑みは店内ではふわっと浮いていました。
注文したのはエビアボカド.....なんとかガレットでした。なんかカリッとしていて、重たくなくて、野菜があって、その野菜がドレスを着ていて、アボカドもエビも乗っていた。カリカリガレットの中にチーズを薄く挟んでいました。あと真っ赤なトマトもね。小さな庭や～
胃に軽い小さな庭。このヘルシーな庭に対抗し、体内のバランスを取り戻すためにホットココアを注文しました。ポカポカのココアは上出来でした。☕

さて、我が愛しき民たちよ。
この皿の上の小さな庭を探す旅にまいりましょう……。

Hello！
The weather is getting better and better each day. I weeeeeeeee lluuuuvvv gud weathaaaaa.
Climbed Mt. Goyou last saturday! Not till the top though.... Only half way until we reached the Azalea road. But as usual, in order to see a great view, you gotta pay in one way or another. My leeeeegggssss of course. One day Imma gonna cry! as I climb. It aint funny at first but by the time you see the view....you'll think it was worth it! In all honesty the climb wasn't that bad. Its easier than Mt. Imade for sure (At least for me).

Anyway there were a LOT of Azaleas blooming and it was an amazing view! The air was tasty, the sunlight was not too strong, and your surrounded by Azaleas left and right! They smelt amazing! I think. Maybe it was me who smelt good. Who knows. I recommend going early in the morning when there are very few people! We started at 5 in the morning and got to the Azalea road by 6... or 6:30....It dosent take long.
Oh I also saw a mole! ya know them whack-a-mole things! Twas tiny and cute and dead~
This is my favorite mountain so far! Recommend it!

日に日に天気が良くなってきましたね。
先週の土曜日は五葉山に登ってきました！……と言っても山頂までは行かず、ツツジロードまでしか行ってないです。

でも、やっぱり絶景を見るには何かしら代償を払わないといけませんね。その代償は私の足でした。いつか登りながら泣く日が来るかもしれません。へとへとで涙と汗の違いが分からなくなるかもね。

最初は登った時「なんでこんなことしてるんだろう……」って思ったんですが、景色を見た瞬間に「来てよかった！」と思った。
空気美味しいし、日差しがちょうどいい感じでしたし、左右にツツジがあっていい香りでたし。。。。多分ね。気のせいかもしれない。あと、誰もいなかったからゆっくり写真撮りながら朝日を見れるので、本当気持ちいいです！朝5時から登って、6時半にツツジロードにつきましたので、そんなに時間はかからなかったです。

あと、動物ありましたよー！モグラ！小っちゃくてかわいい～帰らぬモグラでした。👀

正直なところ、登りはそこまで大変じゃありませんでした。今出山よりは楽だった気がします（少なくとも私にとっては）。
それにしても、ツツジが本当にたくさん咲いていて、とてもきれいでした！朝早い時間なら人も少ないので、おすすめですよ！
