The County Government of Bomet through the department of Agriculture livestock and fisheries, in partnership with HarvestPlus, has introduced a pilot contract farming programme for High Iron Beans (HIB). The initiative seeks to improve farmers' access to reliable markets while promoting the production of biofortified beans

The programme was launched by the CECM for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Hon. Ambrose Koech, on Wednesday in Kipreres Ward and on Thursday in Chebunyo Ward. During the launch, he encouraged farmers to embrace High Iron Bean farming because it generates income and provides food for families

HarvestPlus Programme Officer Mr. Gideon Kipchumba encouraged farmers to embrace the contract farming arrangement, describing it as one of the best approaches to securing a reliable market for their produce. He noted that the programme would motivate farmers to increase production while improving their incomes

Through the contract farming arrangement, participating farmers are guaranteed a ready market for their harvest. This reduces marketing challenges, minimizes post-harvest losses, and gives farmers greater confidence to increase bean production .The programme also promotes the adoption of High Iron Beans, which are rich in iron and essential nutrients, helping to improve nutrition and food security

In attendance included the CECM for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Hon. Ambrose Koech, Bomet County Crops Officer Mr. Dennis Mutai, HarvestPlus Programme Officer Mr. Gideon Kipchumba, Bomet East Crops Officer Mr. Isaiah Ronoh, Chepalungu Sub-County Agricultural Officer Mr. Tangus, and Chebunyo Ward Agricultural Officer Mr. Nehemiah Langat.
