BAKU, AZERBAIJAN - Garissa County has strengthened its voice on global urban development and climate resilience after County Secretary Mohamud Hassan represented the county at the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum held in Baku, Azerbaijan.
During the high-level forum, the County Secretary joined leaders, development partners, urban planners and policymakers from across the globe in discussions focused on climate resilience, sustainable urban development and protecting vulnerable urban populations from climate-related shocks.
In his address, Mohamud Hassan called for inclusive and people-centred urban planning, noting that poor communities remain the most affected by floods, drought, water scarcity and weak infrastructure despite contributing the least to climate change. He emphasized the need for resilient drainage systems, climate-smart infrastructure, improved healthcare, sanitation and stronger disaster preparedness measures in rapidly growing urban areas.
The conference offered Garissa County an opportunity to learn from global best practices on urban resilience, sustainable infrastructure and climate adaptation models that can help shape future planning within Garissa Municipality and other growing urban centres in the county.
Residents of Garissa stand to benefit from the knowledge-sharing and partnerships built during the forum, particularly in areas of flood mitigation, urban drainage improvement, access to climate financing, waste management, water systems and sustainable settlement planning.
On the sidelines of the conference, the County Secretary also attended a bilateral meeting between the African Development Bank (AfDB) and representatives of cities and municipalities. The discussions focused on funding models available through the bank to support urban development projects, climate adaptation programmes and infrastructure expansion in urban areas.
The engagement is expected to open doors for future collaboration and financing opportunities that can support Garissa Countyβs efforts to build safer, resilient and sustainable urban spaces for its residents.
The World Urban Forum is one of the leading global conferences on sustainable urbanization and is convened by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme. This yearβs session brought together governments, financial institutions and development agencies to discuss practical solutions for the future of cities and urban communities.
