It was pomp, colour and celebration today as the Water and Sanitation Providers Association (WASPA) Games 2026 officially opened in Kericho Town.
The colourful opening ceremony was presided over by the CECM for Finance and Economic Planning and Head of County Treasury, Hon. Jackson Rop, on behalf of H.E. the Governor, Dr. Erick Mutai.
More than 3,000 participants from 37 water and sanitation sector institutions have converged in Kericho for five days of competition, culture, networking and camaraderie. The participating institutions include Water Service Providers and sector agencies such as Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency, Central Rift Water Works Development Agency, National Water Harvesting and Storage Authority and Athi Water Works Development Agency.
The festivities began with a vibrant procession from Moi Gardens to Kericho TTC, culminating in a ceremonial tree-planting exercise at the Kericho TTC Peace Corner, led by Hon. Jackson Rop.
He was joined by WASPA members led by Chairman Thomas Odongo and CEO Anthony Njaramba, CECM for Water, Energy, Environment, Forestry and Natural Resources Hon. Geo. Philemon Kurgat, County Secretary Mr. Philip Rono, and the Chairperson of the Water Committee at the County Assembly of Kericho, Hon. Kemoi Peter.
The ceremony culminated in a colourful march-past by all participating teams, showcasing the diversity and unity of the water and sanitation fraternity.
Speaking during the event, Hon. Rop welcomed all participants to the Green County of Kericho, assuring them of the warm hospitality of our people,while playfully cautioning them that they may be “swimming in the hospitality of our people, but could also be drowned by Kericho’s famous rains and biting cold!”
