It was pomp, colour and celebration today as the Water and Sanitation Providers Association (WASPA) Games 2026 officially opened in Kericho Town.

The colourful opening ceremony was presided over by the CECM for Finance and Economic Planning and Head of County Treasury, Hon. Jackson Rop, on behalf of H.E. the Governor, Dr. Erick Mutai.

More than 3,000 participants from 37 water and sanitation sector institutions have converged in Kericho for five days of competition, culture, networking and camaraderie. The participating institutions include Water Service Providers and sector agencies such as Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency, Central Rift Water Works Development Agency, National Water Harvesting and Storage Authority and Athi Water Works Development Agency.

The festivities began with a vibrant procession from Moi Gardens to Kericho TTC, culminating in a ceremonial tree-planting exercise at the Kericho TTC Peace Corner, led by Hon. Jackson Rop.

He was joined by WASPA members led by Chairman Thomas Odongo and CEO Anthony Njaramba, CECM for Water, Energy, Environment, Forestry and Natural Resources Hon. Geo. Philemon Kurgat, County Secretary Mr. Philip Rono, and the Chairperson of the Water Committee at the County Assembly of Kericho, Hon. Kemoi Peter.

The ceremony culminated in a colourful march-past by all participating teams, showcasing the diversity and unity of the water and sanitation fraternity.

Speaking during the event, Hon. Rop welcomed all participants to the Green County of Kericho, assuring them of the warm hospitality of our people,while playfully cautioning them that they may be “swimming in the hospitality of our people, but could also be drowned by Kericho’s famous rains and biting cold!”

Chemosot Ward Development Tour

Chemosot Ward in Bureti Sub-County has today played host to senior County Government officials led by Kericho Governor H.E. Dr. Erick Mutai for a ward development tour during which a series of transformative development projects were commissioned and launched.

The team began the tour by launching the distribution of water pipes for the Chelelaibei and Getarwet last-mile water distribution projects. Spanning a combined length of over eight kilometres, the two projects are expected to significantly improve access to clean and safe piped water for hundreds of households, easing the long-standing water challenges experienced by residents of the area.

The Governor, accompanied by Chemosot MCA Hon. Anita Biegon, Members of the County Assembly, County Executive Committee Members, and other senior county officials, later proceeded to Chemosot Vocational Training Centre, where he officially commissioned the newly constructed Twin Workshop.

Speaking during the event, Governor Mutai noted that the remarkable success of the Equalizer Vocational Training Sponsorship Programme, which has graduated over 6,000 industry-ready youth in just two years, has led to increased enrolment in vocational institutions across the county. He added that many graduates have secured employment both locally and abroad, while others have successfully ventured into self-employment, underscoring the need to expand existing training facilities and establish new ones.

The delegation later presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a modern Outpatient Department (OPD) at Chemosot Health Centre. Once complete, the facility will strengthen healthcare service delivery and improve access to quality medical services for residents of Chemosot Ward and neighbouring areas.

The development tour also featured an agricultural empowerment programme where the Governor distributed improved tissue-cultured banana seedlings to women's groups and widows to promote sustainable farming and enhance household incomes.

This was the message to candidates of Chepseon Vocational Training Centre from the County Director of Education, Mrs.Irine Ngeno during the special prayer session at the institution.
Mrs.Ngeno used the opportunity to appeal to the youth to enrol in the various vocational training centres in the county and earn the needed skills in the job market.

SERVICE DELIVERY RESUMES AT KERICHO COUNTY REFERRAL HOSPITAL AND ALL COUNTY HEALTH FACILITIES

The County Government of Kericho is pleased to inform members of the public that full service delivery has resumed across all county health facilities following the amicable resolution of the recent industrial unrest.

This afternoon, a team of senior county officials led by the Chairperson of the Kericho County Public Service Board, Mr. Joseph Kipkemoi Koske, visited Kericho County Referral Hospital to assess the status of service delivery and the hospital's operations.

The team expressed satisfaction with the smooth resumption of services and commended healthcare workers for their commitment to restoring normal operations.

GOVERNOR MUTAI HOLDS CONSULTATIVE MEETING WITH HEALTH WORKERS' CAUCUS, WITNESSES LABORATORY OFFICERS' RECOGNITION AGREEMENT

In a bid to secure a lasting solution to the perennial industrial disputes that have disrupted service delivery in the health sector, the County Government of Kericho today held a consultative meeting bringing together representatives of Laboratory Technology Officers, Public Health Officers, Biomedical Engineers, Universal Health Coverage (UHC) staff, and the Nutritionists and Dieticians Union.

The meeting, chaired by H.E. Governor Dr. Erick Mutai, provided a platform for candid engagement on cross-cutting issues affecting healthcare workers with the aim of enhancing productivity, improving staff welfare, and strengthening the delivery of quality healthcare services across the county.

The discussions focused on key concerns, including employment terms, career progression, implementation of recognition agreements, and other labour relations matters. The Governor reaffirmed the County Government's commitment to fostering a healthy working relationship with all healthcare professionals through continuous dialogue, mutual respect, and good faith engagement.

A major highlight of the meeting was the signing of a Recognition Agreement between the County Government of Kericho and the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Union (KMLTTU), led by Secretary General Nyakundi Moriasi Pius. The agreement effectively brought the industrial action by laboratory personnel to an end, paving the way for the full resumption of laboratory services in the county.

Governor Mutai noted that the agreement marks another significant milestone in the County Government's broader efforts to restore stability within the health sector by addressing labour concerns through consultation rather than confrontation.

He thanked the leadership of the various health workers' unions and all healthcare professionals for their cooperation, understanding, and commitment to constructive engagement in the best interest of the people of Kericho.

FULL SERVICE DELIVERY EXPECTED AFTER CLINICAL OFFICERS SIGN COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT

Full service delivery across all public health facilities in Kericho County is expected to resume after Governor H.E. Dr. Erick Mutai led successful engagements with the Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO), culminating in the signing of a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with the union led by its General Secretary, Mr. George Kibore.

The agreement, which now awaits formal ratification, effectively brings to an end the clinical officers' industrial action and paves the way for the full restoration of healthcare services across the county.

Speaking while witnessing the signing ceremony at the County Headquarters, Governor Mutai reaffirmed his administration's unwavering commitment to resolving labour disputes through respectful dialogue, mutual understanding, and diplomacy while ensuring that essential public services are not disrupted.

The Governor strongly condemned the actions of sponsored goons who invaded one of the county's hospitals during the industrial action, exposing newborn babies in the Newborn Unit to the vagaries of the weather and placing their lives at unnecessary risk.

He termed the incident unfortunate and unacceptable, emphasizing that healthcare facilities are places of healing that must be protected from violence, intimidation, and acts that endanger the lives of patients and healthcare workers.

Governor Mutai commended both the County Government's negotiating team and the leadership of KUCO for demonstrating goodwill and a shared commitment to finding an amicable solution in the interest of the people of Kericho.
