Opondo Kaluma’s recent remarks are reckless, irresponsible and completely unbecoming of a leader entrusted with representing the people of Homa Bay. Political differences should never be turned into a justification for intimidating investors, threatening businesses or encouraging hostility towards establishments that provide livelihoods to ordinary residents.
It is deeply troubling for a sitting Member of Parliament to speak in a manner that could fuel violence or disrupt access to essential services. Blocking roads and creating an atmosphere of confrontation can have serious consequences, especially for patients, workers, traders and families who depend on these facilities every day.
If Kaluma believes his political opponents have failed the people, the answer should be accountability, debate and development—not incitement and confrontation. And if public resources have been used to construct roads, airports or other infrastructure, those facilities belong to the people and should serve every Kenyan, regardless of their political affiliation.
Homa Bay deserves leaders who attract investment, create opportunities and unite communities—not politicians who turn development projects and public spaces into political weapons.
A leader seeking another term should be telling constituents what he has delivered and what he intends to do for them—not encouraging division. Politics must have limits. Homa Bay cannot afford to normalize inflammatory rhetoric, intimidation and political violence.

When Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga appeared before the Public Accounts Committee, she reportedly acknowledged that KSh500,000 was spent on constructing a two-door toilet—a figure that has left many Kenyans raising their eyebrows.
The bigger question, however, is where the county’s billions are going. Homa Bay has reportedly received about KSh33 billion during Governor Wanga’s tenure, while the county has cumulatively received roughly KSh88 billion since the advent of devolution.
Yet residents are left asking: Where are the hospitals? Where are the roads? Where are the modern markets, water projects, industries and jobs? Where is the transformation?
Apart from a lavish governor’s office and a stadium, what tangible mega-projects can residents point to and say, “Haya ndiyo matunda ya devolution”?
KSh500,000 for a two-door toilet? KSh88 billion into the county over the years? Homa Bay residents deserve more than explanations—they deserve answers, accountability and value for their money.
