Trans Nzoia Steps Up NTDs Fight With safe and Clean Water Projects.

The County Government of Trans Nzoia department of health has intensified efforts to eliminate Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) by investing in safe water supply and sanitation projects in Keiyo Ward.

Speaking during the documentation of the strides made in the elemination of the NTDs in the County through various intervations t in collaboration with the partners,Trans Nzoia County CECM for Health and Sanitation Christopher Lorot said the department has worked closely with partners and local leadership to reduce bilharzia, Jiggers and intestinal worms cases in Keiyo ward Kwanza Sub County among other wards in the County.

“Keiyo Ward had a prevalence rate of 2% for bilharzia. Through boreholes and rehabilitation of Asegam Dam, the community now has clean water and cases have reduced,” Mr. Lorot said.

He added that the County has established an NTD WASH technical working group bringing together government and non‑governmental partners.

“We meet regularly to monitor health issues. The County Assembly has also allocated Sh3 million for water and sanitation interventions,” he said.

Mr. Lorot said the department has advised procurement of praziquantel tablets to support treatment, and plans are underway to upgrade laboratories to test for bilharzia.

Trans Nzoia County NTD Coordinator Dr. Norbert Wesonga Musundi said the County is preparing key documents including the NTD WASH coordination framework, an anti‑jigger strategic plan, and a school water and sanitation plan.

“We also have the Environmental Health and Sanitation Act of 2022, which is due for adoption by the County Assembly,” Dr. Musundi said.

He applauded partners such as AMREF Health Africa, Global Health Alliance Kenya, End Fund, and the African Institute for Health Development for supporting mass drug administration, sensitization, and behaviour change activities.

“There is a close link between water, sanitation, hygiene and NTDs. Without safe water, we cannot succeed,” he said.

Kwanza Sub County public health officers Mercy Obonyo and Maxwell Isanya said rehabilitation of Asegam Dam has reduced bilharzia spread.

“The dam was open and children swam there. Now it is fenced and safe,” Mrs. Obonyo said.

Mr. Isanya added that a borehole at Keiyo Market now serves over 3,000 households.

“Before, women and children walked two kilometres for water. Today, the community has clean water at their doorstep,” he said.

Mrs. Obonyo noted that the water point also serves Keiyo Dispensary, the police post, and the chief’s office.

A local teacher Irine Mbone Aswani said the project has transformed both the community and school life.

“We used to travel kilometres for water. Pupils missed classes due to stomach problems. Now the school is full and children are healthy,” she said.

She added that sensitization meetings and school health clubs have strengthened WASH practices.

“We have handwashing stations across the school. Pupils wash hands after latrines and before eating. Health has really improved,” she said.

Jackson Omukundi the area community health promoter (CHP) said the community members have taken ownership of the project by contributing monthly for maitance and repairs of the facility

“Even though the water is free, we protect the facility. We want it to last,” Mr Omukundi said.

He called for more collaboration between County, national government, partners and well‑wishers.

“We need more water points to eliminate bilharzia, interstinalworms and other NTDs Safe water is the key,” Mr Omukundi said.

The Partners representative Dr Noelah Awa praised progress made in reducing bilharzia and intestinal worm cases in Trans Nzoia. Awa, said the county has seen big improvements, especially in hygiene and sanitation.

“Initially there were a cases of bilharzia in Keiyo ward, worm and jiggers cases. These were the most prevalent diseases in this county but We have seen great improvements" She noted.

Trans Nzoia Builds Toilets to End Open Defecation

The County Government of Trans Nzoia, working with WASH Alliance Kenya, AMREF Health Africa, Global Alliance for Elimination of NTDs Kenya, and the End Fund, has stepped up efforts to eliminate open defecation through toilet construction and health education.

County NTDs Coordinator Dr. Norbert Wesonga Musundi said sensitization has reached schools, households, and markets through the engagement with the Community health promoters and the Change agents⁰.

“We have used puppetry in schools, CHPs in villages, and community champions like bodaboda leaders, traders, and faith groups. They are trained as TOTs and help spread the message,” he said.

Over 380 schools have been visited by public health officers to ensure toilets and handwashing points are in place. Pupils have been sensitized on hygiene and the dangers of NTDs.

In Keiyo Ward, every household is now required to have a toilet. Dr. Musundi said latrine coverage was very low in 2021, with 12 villages at high risk.

“Through community‑led total sanitation, we expect to declare those villages open defecation free by June. Already, latrine use has improved and cases have gone down,” he said.

Kwanza Sub County PHO Mercy Obonyo said households are encouraged to build pit latrines or share with neighbours.

“Our main role is to ensure each household has a toilet. That is the only way to stop these diseases,” she said.

Ward PHO Maxwell Isanya confirmed a sharp drop in diarrhoea cases.

“Previously we recorded 10 to 15 cases daily. Now it is none or one in a month,” he said.

Assistant Chief Simion Kwemoi said enforcement has helped.

“We summon households without toilets and encourage them. Many have complied. Toilet coverage has improved,” he said.

Challenges remain. Some toilets collapse during rains or are built with weak materials like nylon sheets. Poverty also makes construction difficult.

Community Health Promoters have stepped in to support vulnerable families. In Siambe village, CHPs contributed posts and nails to build a toilet for one household.

“The family is now doing well because they have a place to go,” said CHP Alice Issiah.

Partners praised the community spirit. Noel Awa said residents are finding ways to build toilets despite limited resources.

“In Siambe, people came together and built a toilet with the few materials they had. It is a good move,” she said.

The County now hopes to sustain progress and declare more villages open defecation free, reducing the burden of neglected tropical diseases.

COUNTY LEADERS URGE WOMEN TO CHAMPION DEVELOPMENT AND GOOD GOVERNANCE

Trans Nzoia County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Public Works, Roads and Energy Gideon Barongo and his counterpart for Gender, Youth, Sports, Culture and Tourism Eliud Tormoi on Sunday joined members of the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Women Ministries at Ndura Park Nature Conservancy, where they discussed women empowerment, self-reliance and leadership.

Speaking during the event, Barongo underscored the role of the church in fostering unity and social cohesion among communities, describing it as one of the most influential institutions in society. He noted that unlike many other organizations that serve specific groups, the church brings together people from different backgrounds, ethnicities, professions and social classes under one roof. According to him, this unique position places the church at the centre of promoting peaceful coexistence, development and accountability in leadership.

"The church is the only institution that brings all communities together and remains a benchmark for a cohesive society. The church needs to come out strongly and speak about unity of purpose, development and good governance," said Barongo.

He urged members of faith-based organizations to support leaders who uphold integrity and godly values.
"I encourage communities of faith to support and work with leaders who fear God and love to do the right things, such as His Excellency Governor George Natembeya," he said.

Barongo further emphasized the importance of cooperation and hard work in building stronger communities and a better society across Trans Nzoia County. He challenged residents to embrace a culture of collective responsibility, saying meaningful development can only be achieved when citizens work hand in hand with their leaders and actively participate in community-building initiatives. He observed that communities that embrace unity, diligence and mutual support are better positioned to overcome social and economic challenges and achieve sustainable growth.

"Through cooperation and hard work, we can transform our faith communities and the county at large. Development can only be achieved when people work together towards a common goal," he noted.

The Roads CECM also called on residents to rally behind Governor Natembeya's administration.
"I ask you to continue supporting Governor Natembeya through your prayers and, when the time comes, to give him maximum support during next year's elections," Barongo added.

On his part, CECM for Gender, Youth, Sports, Culture and Tourism Eliud Tormoi highlighted the importance of citizens participating in the election of capable leaders.
"Every citizen has a responsibility to participate in electing good leadership because the quality of leadership determines the pace of development in our communities," said Tormoi.

He also praised the critical role played by mothers in nurturing future generations.
"Mothers play a central role in shaping the growth and development of both the girl child and the boy child. The values instilled at home determine the kind of society we build," he said.

Tormoi further urged residents to continue supporting Governor George Natembeya's leadership and development agenda.
"As we champion development and empowerment, let us also continue supporting the leadership of His Excellency George Natembeya as he works to transform the county," he added.

The women leaders present expressed gratitude to Governor Natembeya for the distribution of maize seeds and commended his administration for what they described as good governance and commitment to improving the lives of residents.
