This beautiful Form Four girl was expelled from Precious Blood Girls School Riruta after her parents allegedly failed to pay a remedial fee. According to her mother Terry Muchiri, one of the teachers even read her Facebook post to Geography students and shamelessly bullied and humiliated the girl in front of her classmates.
Her mother has since resorted to homeschooling her. This is very disturbing. Teachers nowadays seem to have become increasingly money-minded. I wonder what happened to compassion, professionalism, and the responsibility of teachers to protect and support their students.
A child should never be publicly shamed or humiliated because of her parents’ financial situation. Schools should be safe spaces for learning, growth, and dignity, not places where students are made to feel worthless because their families cannot afford an extra fee.
Nowadays you have to bribe a teacher just to get them to follow up on your child's academic performance. Some demand extra money so they can favour your child during remedial lessons.
And when some teachers discover that you come from a humble background, they seem to develop a strange dislike for you simply because your parents or guardians cannot afford to give them extra cash,, even when the child is an orphan.
Teachers have become something else nowadays. Ama it's the difficult economy taking a toll on them? But compassion and kindness don't cost a thing. Someone once said students from public schools need counselling after completing high school. Maybe she was right after all.
