The Kitui governor Dr. Julius Malombe has officially launched a 14- member county sand harvesting and management taskforce this afternoon.
In a move to curb the uphazard sand harvesting in the county, the taskforce has been mandated with formulating sustainable and environmentally friendly policies for sand harvesting in Kitui.
The force that begins operations from today will be chaired by Mrs. Esther Musili, former ADS chief executive; assisted by Mr. Jerimoth Muasya, former Kyuso branch KNUT chair.
According to the taskforce preliminary report tabled before the governor this afternoon, the team has demarcated five main river basins, namely: Tiva-Nzeeu-Mwitasyano River basin (covering rivers Tiva, Nzeeu, Mwitasyano, Mutendea,Kalundu, Kauwi,Ithimani, Mwiwe, Muvuko, Ikindu, and adjacent streams); Thua-Ikoo-Ngunfa River basin (comprised of rivers Thua, Ikoo, Ngunga, Kiongwe, Masaa, Vinda, and adjacent rivers and streams); Enziu-Mwania-Mui River basin (made up of rivers Enziu, Kivou, Mwania, Isou, Thunguthu and adjacent streams);Tyaa-Nguutani-Kamuwongo River basin (covering rivers Tyaa, Kamuwongo, Nguutani, Kanginga, Mbakini and adjacent streams), and; Nziitu-Katse-Kanyungu River basin (made up of rivers Nziitu, Nguuku, Iguini, Konyu, Thua, Katse, Wangutu, Kalenge, Mwangea, Kanyungu, and adjacent rivers and streams).
The taskforce will carry out public participation across the county and formulate sand harvesting and management policies that will inform a bill to be tabled later in the county assembly for enaction into law.
