Revival of Stalled Maternity Project to Strengthen Services at Kitui County Referral Hospital

Under the leadership of Governor Dr. Julius Malombe, the Ministry of Health and Sanitation has today officially handed over the site for completion of the Kitui Maternity Complex. The project comprises a Postnatal Ward, Newborn Unit, Pediatric Ward, and will also include a fully equipped theatre to support specialized maternal and child health services.

Once complete, the facility is expected to ease congestion at the referral hospital, expand capacity, and improve the quality of care for mothers, newborns, and children. The addition of a theatre will strengthen the hospital’s ability to handle complicated deliveries and pediatric cases locally, reducing the need for referrals.

The expanded maternity complex is part of comprehensive efforts by the County Government to progressively upgrade Kitui County Referral Hospital to a Level V facility, capable of offering more advanced and specialized services to residents.

Governor Dr. Julius Malombe today commissioned the renovated maternity block and outpatient facilities at Endau Dispensary in Endau/Malalani Ward, Kitui East Sub-county, a move set to enhance access to quality healthcare services and improve maternal and outpatient care for residents in the area.

The Governor also inspected the newly constructed mortuary at the facility, which will support dignified preservation of bodies and ease the burden on families seeking such services locally.

Teen Discharged After Surviving Deadly Black Mamba Bite in Kitui

A 16 year-old boy from Mathima in M***a Ward, Kitui South, who suffered a life threatening black mamba bite has been successfully treated and discharged, in a case that reflects the steady improvements in snakebite response across the county.

Kennedy Kakula Julius was bitten on the left foot at around 10:00 a.m. on April 5, 2026. He arrived at Kitui County Referral Hospital (KCRH) at 5:30 p.m., more than six hours later, in critical condition.

Black mamba bites are known to act fast, affecting the nervous system and often turning fatal if treatment is delayed.

On arrival at KCRH, Snakebite Coordinator Caroline Mbangula led the emergency response. The team immediately put the patient on oxygen and administered 20 vials of PANAF Premium antivenom in a process that lasted from 6:00 p.m. to midnight. Throughout the procedure, the team received real time guidance from Dr. Erulu, a consultant from Watamu Snake Farm.

Despite the delay, the patient responded well to treatment and stabilized. He has since been discharged, with mild effects such as ptosis and slight dysarthria, which cleared within 24 hours.

Speaking after the incident, Ms. Mbangula described the experience as intense, noting that the team was determined not to lose the patient despite the late presentation.

The case has also sparked discussion among clinicians, as the patient survived well beyond the commonly expected critical window for black mamba bites. This points to the need for further observation and understanding of how such cases present locally.

The County Ministry of Health and Sanitation has in recent months stepped up efforts to manage snakebite cases by procuring and stocking anti-snake venom in most health facilities located in high-risk areas. This has made it easier for patients to access life saving treatment without delays.

Kennedy’s survival is a clear sign that these efforts are making a difference. With trained staff, available antivenom, and coordinated response, more lives are being saved, even in cases that would once have been considered fatal.

Speaking during the commissioning, CECM for Health and Sanitation, Ruth Koki, said the investment reflects the County Government’s firm resolve to transform healthcare and deliver on Governor Dr. Julius Malombe’s agenda of accessible, quality health services.

“This is a clear statement of where we are headed as a county. We are deliberately investing in advanced medical equipment to strengthen our referral system, improve diagnosis, and ensure our people receive quality, timely care without leaving Kitui,” she said.

CECM Koki emphasized that the move is part of a broader strategy to modernize health facilities and reduce the burden on families forced to seek specialized services outside the county.

She also urged residents to enroll with the Social Health Authority (SHA) to access services affordably and fully benefit from the improved healthcare infrastructure.

C.O for Drugs and Medical Supplies, Aggrey Kamba, noted that the installation of the BERA machine will significantly reduce referrals and bring critical diagnostic services closer to the people.

Kitui County Strengthens Efforts to Eliminate Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV

Ministry of Health and Sanitation has intensified efforts to eliminate mother-to-child transmission (eMTCT) of HIV following a high-level consultative meeting held today with key stakeholders in the HIV response.

The engagement brought together stakeholders to review progress, assess ongoing interventions, identify existing gaps, and develop targeted strategies aimed at ending new HIV infections among children by 2027.

Discussions highlighted notable progress made in reducing mother-to-child transmission of HIV, attributed to strengthened partnerships, improved service delivery, and sustained commitment from all stakeholders involved.

Stakeholders agreed on priority actions to accelerate progress, including scaling up proven interventions, strengthening early testing and treatment for mothers and infants, and enhancing community outreach to reach vulnerable populations.

The meeting was attended by key stakeholders including CHAK, DEK, CIHEB among others who continue to play a critical role in supporting health systems strengthening, community engagement, and HIV/AIDS response initiatives across the county.

Kitui Marks World TB Day with Free Screening Drive in Zombe

Kitui County marked World TB Day at Zombe Market, Kitui East Sub-County, with the rollout of a free tuberculosis (TB) screening campaign across all eight sub-counties.

The initiative, led by the Ministry of Health and Sanitation in partnership with CMMB and Amref Health Africa, is focused on early detection, awareness, and access to free treatment.

Residents have been urged to take advantage of the exercise and know their TB status. Early diagnosis is key to stopping the spread and saving lives, especially for vulnerable groups including children, the elderly, and people with weakened immunity.

During the event, community sensitization activities were carried out to educate the public on TB symptoms such as persistent cough, chest pain, fever, and weight loss, encouraging those with symptoms to seek immediate medical attention.

Health officials reaffirmed the county’s commitment to strengthening community-based interventions, with support from partners including Amref Health Africa, CMMB, Kenya Red Cross, CHS, and Community Health Promoters (CHPs), all working together to bring services closer to the people.

The planned construction of the Late Nzamba Kitonga Memorial Hospital in Mutitu, Kitui East Sub_County has entered a new phase after the project site was officially handed over to the contractor.

Earlier, during a visit to Kitui County, President William Ruto pledged the National Government’s support to ensure the facility is completed in order to strengthen healthcare services in the region. The project was later discussed during a meeting between Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe and officials from the Ministry of Defence, led by Principal Secretary Dr. Patrick Mariru, at the Defence Headquarters in Nairobi, where the two sides reviewed the progress and implementation plans for the hospital.

With the site now under the contractor’s possession, construction works are expected to begin soon and are projected to take approximately ten months to complete.

The upcoming hospital will have a 75-bed capacity, which will help expand healthcare services in Kitui East and reduce pressure on existing facilities while improving access to treatment for residents in the area.

Once complete, the facility is expected to play an important role in strengthening healthcare services in the area by bringing additional capacity and improving access to care for residents of Kitui East and the surrounding communities.

Kitui County Marks World Kidney Day with Call for Early Screening

The Ministry of Health and Sanitation joined the global community in commemorating World Kidney Day 2026 under the theme “Kidney Health for All.”

The commemoration highlighted the growing burden of kidney disease and the importance of prevention, early detection and access to treatment. Health officials noted that kidney disease often develops silently and many patients only seek care when the condition has progressed to advanced stages, making treatment more complex and costly.

Speaking during the event, Chief Officer for Drugs and Medical Supplies, Aggrey Kamba emphasized the county’s continued investment in strengthening health systems and addressing the rising burden of Non-Communicable Diseases including chronic kidney disease.

He noted that the county has made significant progress in expanding kidney care services. In 2018, a renal unit was established at Kitui County Referral Hospital equipped with dialysis machines and supported by a trained consultant nephrologist, specialized nephrology nurses and nutritionists. Since its establishment, the unit has provided more than 15,000 dialysis sessions, offering life-saving treatment to patients who previously had to travel long distances to access care.

Dialysis services have also been expanded to Mwingi Level 4 Hospital to bring essential kidney care closer to communities.

In addition, the county government is constructing the South Eastern Kenya Renal Centre at Kitui County Referral Hospital. The 20-bed facility is expected to serve residents of Kitui and the wider South Eastern Kenya Economic Bloc (SEKEB) region, significantly improving access to specialised haemodialysis services.

Health officials also emphasized that prevention remains the most effective strategy in addressing kidney disease. Residents were encouraged to adopt healthy lifestyles, regularly check their blood pressure and blood sugar levels, and seek medical advice early.

Community Health Promoters were recognized for their critical role in educating families, promoting healthy living and linking communities to health facilities.

The county further acknowledged the support of partners including the Kenya Red Cross, City Gate Specialist Hospital, Metronics Labs, Microbiology East Africa Limited and Micro Lab Limited among other whose collaboration continues to strengthen health services in the county.

The consultative forum brings together the Ministry of Health and Sanitation team led by CECM for Health and Sanitation,Ruth Koki and members of the County Assembly Health Committee to deliberate on the provisions of the Bill and its anticipated impact on service delivery in public health facilities. The discussions aim to provide MCAs with a clear understanding of the proposed law ahead of its consideration by the County Assembly.

During the session, the Ministry of Health and Sanitation team demonstrated commendable preparedness and technical understanding of the proposed legislation, offering detailed explanations on the purpose, structure and expected benefits of the Bill. Their presentations provided clarity on how the proposed framework will enhance accountability, support facility-level financing and ultimately improve healthcare services for the people of Kitui.

County Attorney Timothy Muange was also present and provided professional legal guidance on the Bill, explaining its legal framework and addressing questions raised by the MCAs to ensure a clear understanding of its provisions and alignment with existing laws.

The engagement highlights the ministry’s commitment to collaborative policy development and informed legislative processes aimed at strengthening the health sector.

Once enacted, the Health Facilities Improvement Financing Bill is expected to enhance the operational capacity of health facilities and contribute significantly to improved access to quality healthcare services across Kitui County.

Kitui County Receives KSh 48 Million Medical Supplies to Boost Health Services

Health facilities across Kitui County are set to benefit from a fresh supply of essential medicines and medical commodities after the County Ministry of Health and Sanitation received pharmaceuticals and non-pharmaceuticals worth KSh 48 million from the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority.

The consignment, procured during the third quarter, is expected to replenish existing stocks and strengthen the availability of essential medicines and supplies in hospitals, health centres and dispensaries across the county.

The supplies were received by Chief Officer for Drugs and Medical Supplies Aggrey Kamba on behalf of the CECM for Health and Sanitation Ruth Koki.

C.O Kamba said the county government remains committed to ensuring that all public health facilities remain adequately stocked. “This consignment will help sustain the availability of essential medicines across our facilities and guarantee residents continuous access to quality healthcare services,” he said.

Speaking during the handover, KCRH Medical Superintendent Dr. Mungai confirmed that SHA is currently working effectively for both inpatient and outpatient services. He noted that key services including X-ray diagnostics, renal care and cancer treatment are already being supported under the scheme.

The supplies will now be distributed to health facilities across Kitui County to support uninterrupted healthcare services and improve access to essential medicines for residents.
