Uzazi Salama Uzazi Salama is a Kiswahili word that means better maternal and child health.

The project aims at improving access to better maternal and child services in Samburu County, in Kenya. Through a very comprehensive model, Amref Health Africa, PharmAccess and the County Government of Samburu, through funding from MPESA Foundation, have used innovations to improve the MNCH indicators in the county.

Getting medical oxygen supply systems installed in any facility is expensive. However, the need for the same equipment cannot be understated. Due to lack of funds facilities in Samburu County lack such required equipment/systems. Tackling this, we have supplied oxygen concentrators in the county. The concentrators work by compressing ambient oxygen to oxygen-enriched gas stream. The device has proven useful in maternal and child health in averting and even dealing with emergencies! Due to lack of electricity and equipment, and sometimes use torches while helping mothers deliver. Not only is the light poor making vision difficult, but its hard for (who handle a health facility alone) to hold the torch and help the mother deliver at the same time! Tackling this challenge, we have supplied gynaecological lamps to facilities in Samburu County. This has significantly helped reduce maternal and child mortality! Lack of proper equipment in health facilities has led to the failure by health workers to provide quality health care. To curb the huge challenge, we have supported 55 facilities in regards to modernisation of the facilities through upgrades. Women in Samburu County can now deliver their babies in comfort as their privacy is assured. The facility in charges also have the equipment they need to provide quality services!
