On 5 May, a high-level Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance delegation led by Board Chair Rt Hon Helen Clark visited Nairobi County, her first country visit since taking up the role in January 2026.

The visit began at Lunga Lunga Health Facility, where the delegation observed immunization service delivery and community engagement. They then joined community health promoters on a home visit to see firsthand how vaccines reach families through primary health care.

The delegation also toured the Central Vaccines Depot in Kitengela, Kenya's national vaccine hub. Every vaccine in the country passes through this facility before distribution to nine regional hubs. The depot stores over six months of national vaccine stock in multiple cold and freezer rooms.

Day 1 of the inaugural Kenya Health Security Convention brought together policymakers, scientists, emergency responders, and health professionals in Mombasa under one theme: Advancing Health Security through Science, Innovation and Equity.

WHO Kenya Acting Representative Dr. Neema Rusibamayila Kimambo spoke at the session on Health Emergency Operations with a clear message:

"Health emergency operations are the engine of public health response. Let us move from systems to performance, from preparedness to readiness, and from response to resilience."

Three priorities came through clearly:
βœ… Strengthen the last mile. Systems must work at the community and facility level, not just nationally.
βœ… Turn every response into a lesson. Every emergency must make the next response stronger.
βœ… Move from systems to performance. Kenya has the foundations. Now they must perform when it matters most.

WHO remains committed to supporting Kenya every step of the way. πŸ’™

Africa's health workforce has tripled in a decade. Yet a shortage of 6.1 million health workers by 2030 remains.

At , the World Health Organization and the Novo Nordisk Foundation convened leaders to address this directly.

Three things came through clearly:

βœ… Train for today’s diseases. Health worker training must reflect the real burden including non-communicable diseases, primary health care, and more.

βœ… Recognize qualifications across borders.

βœ… The infrastructure exists; it now needs consistent adoption.

Safeguarding health systems will only succeed if we understand and support the needs of health workers.

On Day 2 of the World Health Summit Regional Meeting, Nairobi 2026, the Ministerial Dialogue on AI, Data and Digital Sovereignty in Africa addressed one of the most pressing questions facing health systems today:

How responsibly and ethically are we using health data?

Principal Secretary for Health, Dr. Ouma Oluga, OGW framed it clearly:

"Health data is a matter of sovereignty, equity, and the future of our decisions." Kenya is already acting on this. The Digital Health Agency has been started, a Health Data Framework is in place to govern digital health implementation, and Kenya already has a national AI strategy to govern health data.

The conversation across Africa is shifting from whether to use data and AI in health, to how we use it in ways that are ethical, equitable, and sovereign.

42 mothers die per 100,000 births in Africa.

The 2030 target is fewer than 70.

We have 4 years.

At the World Health Summit session on Maternal, Perinatal & Neonatal Health: Leadership and Innovation to Reduce Mortality and Morbidity, leaders and innovators are gathering to confront these numbers head on and map a path forward.

This is not just a statistic. Behind every number is a mother, a family, a community.

The time for action is now. Advocate. Invest. Demand better.

At the World Health Summit Side session on Maternal, Perinatal & Neonatal Health: Leadership and Innovation to Reduce Mortality and Morbidity, one message stood out clearly: increasing coverage is not enough.

Dr. Neema Kimambo, Acting WHO Representative to Kenya, put it plainly:

"Coverage is increasing, yet mortality rates aren't changing. It's not just about access, it's about quality. The service actually has to be there."

The conversation at WHS reminded us that reducing maternal mortality is not just a medical challenge. It is a social, political, and systemic one.
