The Syscal Pro is an industry standard, high precision geophysical technology/ equipment used to see beneath the Earth’s surface without digging a single hole essentially acting like a medical CT scan for the ground or an "X-ray machine" for underground layers.

It is used by the RCGW Technical team for conducting Resistivity measurements to help in aquifer mapping, groundwater exploration, or site assessments.

Key Concepts Breakdown

What it does: The device injects electric current into the ground through metal stakes ( ) and measures how strongly the soil or rock resists that current (electrical resistivity).

When conducting Vertical Electrical Sounding ( ) and Induced Polarization ( ) measurements;

* Our Hydrogeologists lay out long cables with electrodes (current electrodes) hammered into the ground at equal distances along a straight line. The SYSCAL Pro sends controlled electrical pulses into the ground through two designated electrodes.

* It measures the resulting electric voltage difference across other electrodes (potential electrodes) along the line. Water bearing underground layers (aquifers) conduct electricity differently than dry sand, gravel, or hard bedrock.

When Conducting Electrical Resistsivity Tomography ( ) measurements;

* Dozens of electrodes are laid on the ground in a straight line and depending on the electrode-array configurations, special computer software converts these readings into detailed 2D cross sections or 3D block models of the subsurface/ ground.

Why it matters for RCGW:
* It reveals the depth, thickness, and boundary limits of aquifers.
* It can detect locations with freshwater and the movement of salty water into fresh groundwater aquifers or surface waters and map an underground body of polluted groundwater that spreads outward from a specific source.

Why Is the Pro a Favorite in the Field? The SYSCAL Pro features up to “10 simultaneous channels”, meaning it records multiple data points in a single current injection slashing survey times significantly.

The Horn of Africa Groundwater for Resilience Project (HoAGW4RP) has marked another milestone in strengthening the teams implementing the project following the completion of the Senior Management Course, Cohort 265/2026, at the Kenya School of Government Embu Campus.

Through the Regional Centre on Groundwater Resources (RCGW), which serves as a coordinating unit of the capacity building program under the HoAGW4R Project, the project sponsored 43 participants drawn from the county governments and water companies in , , , and , as well as officers from the Ministry Of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation the RCGW, and the Water Resources Authority (WRA) Project Implementation Unit.

The course, which ran from 15 June to 14 August 2026, covered key areas in leadership, management, governance and public service delivery, strengthening the skills required to coordinate and implement the project across the five counties. As implementation of HoAGW4RP progresses, the skills gained will support better project coordination and delivery.

What does the ground beneath our feet actually look like?

When it comes to finding sustainable , Regional Centre on Groundwater Resources Education Training and Research (RCGW) uses advanced science to map what lies beneath the surface using the state-of-the-art equipment called R8.

Think of the SuperSting R8 as an "X-ray machine" for the Earth. Just like a medical scan lets doctors see inside the human body without surgery, this multi-channel electrical resistivity system lets our geologists and geophysicists see deep into the ground without digging massive trenches.

How does it work?

a)- Sending electrical signals: A series of small metal stakes ( ) are placed in a line along the ground.

b)- Measuring Resistance: The SuperSting R8 sends harmless electrical currents into the soil and measures how easily that electricity flows through different underground layers.

c)- Reading the Map: Clean/saline water, hard bedrock, moist clay, and dry sand all transmit electrical current differently:

* Low resistivity usually points to water-bearing zones ( ) or moist soil.

* High resistivity typically signals dense rock or dry sand.

Why does this matter for water security?

By reading these electrical signals across 8 channels simultaneously, the SuperSting R8 builds high-resolution, multi-dimensional profiles of the underground formations in real time. This means we can:

* Pinpoint the exact depth and location of viable groundwater sources.

* Protect aquifers from contamination or over-extraction.

* Save significant time and financial resources by ensuring boreholes are drilled only where water actually exists.

The Regional Centre on Groundwater Resources (RCGW) convened for performance contract negotiations with the Ministry Of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation to agree on FY 2026/27 performance targets in line with the 23rd Performance Contracting Cycle Guidelines.

The negotiations focused on aligning the proposed targets with Centre’s mandate and the agreed performance targets, will support achievement of the Centre’s strategic objectives. The engagement reaffirmed shared commitments to service delivery.

The session brought together RCGW Board of Directors, Management and Ministry officials.

At the Regional Centre on Groundwater Resources (RCGW), accurate data is the foundation of every sustainable water solution we deliver. That’s why we leverage state of the art technology like the Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter ( ) to monitor and understand water movement with unrivalled precision.

Think of the ADV as a high-tech underwater radar gun. Here is how our technical teams put it to work in the field:
