We are in the midst of the “Nyakinyua Community Empowerment Program” for Dagoretti Nyakinyua School students the surrounding community. The program will be extra-curriculum for students who wish to participate. We ask all interested parties to join us in providing the students with food producing seeds. The students will be instructed to plant their seeds in containers filled with soil that they w
ill bring from home. All students, ages 6 – 18, will be encouraged to participate in the construction of an on-campus greenhouse. They will be taught soil preparation, seed planting, greenhouse and crop maintenance, as well as product harvesting. At the end of each harvest, students will have opportunities for inter-community food exchanges. The objective is to provide participating students with enhanced crop producing, distribution, and marketing skills that we hope will propel them to become self-sufficient farmland owners and entrepreneurs of the future. Students will learn how to sow seeds and grow a wide variety of food producing plants (fruits and vegetables) in pots/containers, and greenhouses. We will also encourage some of the students to take their potted plants back to their homes, where they will be maintained by the student/plant owner. Others will be maintained in greenhouses, constructed for and by the students. All projects will be supervised by Boniface Kiwara and other school administrators. We encourage participation from parents, local farmers, farm workers and others from within and around the community. If you wish to donate food producing seeds to the “Nyakinyua Community Empowerment Program,” we invite you to mail seeds to one of the addresses listed below.
