The 12th Biennial Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX-26) is underway in Bhubaneswar, India, bringing together international partners to strengthen maritime search and rescue (SAR) preparedness and response.

Representing Kenya, the Kenya Coast Guard Service is participating as an international observer in tabletop exercises, seminars, and the sea exercise at Paradip Port, exchanging expertise, benchmarking its capabilities, and strengthening coordination with international partners in responding to maritime emergencies.

Through RMRCC, Kenya plays a key role in coordinating distress alerts, vessel tracking, and emergency communications across the Western Indian Ocean. Participation in SAREX-26 reinforces the KCGS’s commitment to enhancing regional cooperation and contributing to effective maritime SAR response.

Today, the Kenya Coast Guard Service hosted a delegation from ’s Central Planning and Project Management Directorate (CPPMD) for a strategic engagement on KCGS’s mandate, programmes and projects.
The session reviewed implementation progress and strengthened alignment with national priorities. It also identified where strategic planning and technical support can improve institutional performance, programme delivery and operational capability in safeguarding Kenya’s maritime domain.

Kenya Coast Guard Service held strategic discussions with Ms. Cynthia Alicia Mulville, Chargé d’Affaires, Embassy of the Argentine Republic in Nairobi, accompanied by Mr. Demian Dobry, Head of Economic and Commercial Section.

The engagement explored areas of mutual interest and opportunities to strengthen Kenya–Argentina cooperation, including knowledge exchange, capacity development and collaboration in support of maritime security, safety and the Blue Economy.

KCGS looks forward to building on the engagement and identifying practical areas for future cooperation.

Building on yesterday’s Tabletop Exercise, today’s full-scale “Okoa Maisha” simulation brought together multiple agencies to test inter-agency coordination, operational preparedness, information-sharing and response capabilities in a simulated El Niño emergency.

The simulation was graced by H.E. Johnson Sakaja, Governor of Nairobi City County, as participating agencies tested their collective capacity to coordinate and respond effectively to potential disasters.

The Director General, Kenya Coast Guard Service, Bruno I. Shioso, EBS, OGW, today joined senior leaders and personnel from Kenya’s security and disciplined services at the National Youth Service Passing-Out Parade at the NYS Paramilitary Academy, Gilgil.
Officiated by Hon. Geoffrey Ruku, Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes, the ceremony marked the passing out of 15,363 recruits following six months of intensive training. In his remarks, CS Ruku highlighted the practical impact of national service through environmental conservation, disaster response, infrastructure development and pathways to employment.
The occasion reaffirmed the enduring role of disciplined services in cultivating discipline, patriotism, skills and a strong culture of service to the nation, while underscoring the continued investment in capable, service-oriented personnel who contribute to Kenya’s national security and development.

Preparedness is strongest when agencies are ready to act as one. The Kenya Coast Guard Service (KCGS), led by Deputy Director, Enforcement and Emergency Response, Lt/Cdr Edwin Angaya, participated in the joint “Okoa Maisha” Tabletop Exercise, strengthening national readiness for potential El Niño-related emergencies.

The exercise brought together key national and county agencies to strengthen inter-agency coordination, information-sharing and response readiness, reinforcing the importance of interoperability in managing emergencies and protecting communities.

Through sustained preparedness and multi-agency cooperation, KCGS continues to strengthen its role in maritime search and rescue, emergency response and the protection of life and livelihoods.
