NMS along with Climate & Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) today held a status update meeting on the implementation of the Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) strategy that involves the construction of pedestrian and cycling lanes aimed at providing safety as well as decongesting the city.

The Non-Motorized Transport Corridors were first rolled out in the CBD and are currently being expanded in surrounding estates. The project will cover a total of 116 km.

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority-Kenya 2015-2019 Road Safety Status Report, pedestrian deaths account for 66.3% of total traffic fatalities in the country, which calls for stringent measures to safeguard the lives of pedestrians.

Furthermore, uptake in walking and cycling culture will significantly mitigate pollution from vehicle emissions which contribute 11% of total emissions in the country and in turn, generate a clean and safer environment for all.

Nairobi Metropolitan Services, NMS Chief Environment Officer Lazarus Kivai speaks about the established Kangundo Road Material Recovery Facility which is part of the city's long-term waste management strategy seeking to reduce the amount of non-reusable waste that ends up at the Dandora dumpsite.

The facilities will allow for secondary segregation, upcycling, recycling, reuse and recovery of wastes. The Nairobi Metropolitan Services, NMS has so far reactivated 21 garbage collection trucks and designated 35 new garbage collection points to tame the upsurge of illegal dumping sites in Nairobi.

Non-Motorized Transport (NMT), which was first rolled out in the CBD, is being expanded to other parts of the city including Donholm to Westlands, City Centre to Lang'ata by way of Nairobi Railway Station, CBD to Roysambu through Ngara, Hurlingham through Uhuru Park and Jogoo Road to the CBD.

The project under the Nairobi Urban Mobility Plan has overseen the construction of safe pedestrian and cycling lanes in order to ensure pedestrian safety as well as decongest the city.

INVITATION FOR PUBLIC COMMENT

Nairobi Metropolitan Services is a citizen-centric public service that was formed on March 9th 2020 following an agreement that led to the transfer of four core functions from Nairobi City County Government to the National Government.

Under the agreement, the NMS is mandated to perform the following functions:

• County Health Services
• County Transport Services
• County Public Works Utilities Ancillary Services; and
• County Physical Planning and Development

The National Government on March 18th 2022 gazetted the extension of NMS' tenure to November 24, 2022, during which the entity will continue to oversee the transferred functions.

NMS is inviting public feedback on the extension. The following questions are suggested as a guide to respondents.

1. What do you see as the key areas that NMS should focus its efforts on?

2. Do you have suggestions for improvement to accelerate service delivery?

The Nairobi Metropolitan Services, NMS in conjunction with Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure-GoK, Kenya National Highways Authority, Kenya Urban Roads Authority, National Police Service, Kenya Railways, National Transport and Safety Authority-Kenya and Kenya Power Care is working towards improving infrastructure within and outside the Green Park Bus Terminal ahead of its launch.

The ongoing development works around the terminal include the installation of underground electric cables, construction &refurbishment of roads along the terminal (Non-Motorized Transport Corridors), and greening of spaces within and around the park.

Nothing compares to nature's enchanting beauty and The Michuki Memorial Conservation Park is a good case in point. The 10.4-hectare green space located along Kipande Road boasts of scenic walkways, clean running water, an amphitheater, eco-friendly bins among other amenities.

The public recreation area was rehabilitated from a site that was previously used as dumpsite and a criminal hideout.
