The sector's contribution to national development is both significant and undeniable. Our recently published PBO Sector Report for the Financial Year 2024/2025 paints a promising picture: PBOs injected over KSh. 246 billion into the Kenyan economy and directly employed more than 68,000 Kenyans. These contributions are not marginal. They are central to our national development ambition. However, the same report reveals a troubling compliance gap, with only 30 percent of active PBOs submitting their statutory reports. This is a gap we must collectively and urgently address to enhance the integrity of the sector.”

The Government has extended by one year the transition period for non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to register under the Public Benefits Organizations Act (Cap. 134).

The extension, effective 14th May 2026, grants NGOs additional time to align with the Act's requirements and complete their conversion into Public Benefits Organizations (PBOs).

This move is expected to ease compliance pressures within the sector, ensure a smoother regulatory transition and enhance accountability and operational stability among civil society organizations.

To facilitate a seamless transition of existing non-governmental organisations to the 2013 PBO Act framework, the government has extended the transition period for a further 12 months, effective 14th May 2026.

We affirm our commitment to providing a facilitative and robust legal, regulatory and institutional framework for a thriving and impactful PBO sector.
