The baby is given antiretroviral medicine as a preventive measure, but this does not mean the baby has HIV.

A baby born to a mother living with HIV is considered HIV-exposed. The baby is given the recommended ARV prophylaxis to protect them from acquiring HIV. The baby will also undergo HIV testing at the recommended times.

The mother also continues taking her ART consistently to maintain viral suppression. This significantly reduces the risk of passing HIV to the baby during pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding.

If the baby's HIV tests remain negative, the baby continues with the recommended follow-up and prophylaxis according to the national guidelines. If testing confirms that the baby has HIV, the child is started on ART for treatment.

NSDCC is strengthening efforts to address HIV and health service gaps in hard-to-reach communities in Marsabit, with North Horr set to host World AIDS Day 2026.

Consultations identified stigma, harmful practices, limited male engagement, food insecurity and cross-border challenges as key issues affecting HIV prevention and treatment. Stakeholders called for stronger multisectoral action, particularly for children, men and vulnerable households.

At the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81) in New York, African leaders and partners called for greater health self-reliance through stronger local research, manufacturing, regulation and access to essential health products.

The discussions come as Kenya strengthens its role in HIV prevention innovation. Kenyan manufacturer Universal Corporation Limited (UCL) is among three sub-Saharan African manufacturers included in early voluntary licensing arrangements for alimatravir, an investigational once-monthly oral HIV prevention pill. Kenya is also participating in its ongoing Phase 3 clinical trials.

The development underscores the importance of building African capacity across the health innovation value chain, from research and clinical trials to regulation, local manufacturing and sustainable access.

If successfully developed and approved, the approach could help bring new HIV prevention options closer to the communities that need them while strengthening Africa's health security and reducing reliance on imported products.

Once-a-month pill is in the last phase of clinical trials, with preparations underway to make it immediately available once approved.

NSDCC Ag. Director, Regional Offices Coordination, Jenny Gakii, led a consultative stakeholder meeting on strengthening investment in Kenya’s Triple Threat response.

The discussions focused on translating policy commitments into sustainable financing and coordinated action to address new HIV infections, teenage pregnancies and sexual and gender-based violence.

Ms Gakii guided stakeholders in identifying practical approaches to mobilise resources, strengthen coordination and sustain interventions that protect and empower young people.

County Government of Nandi has successfully conducted a public education and advocacy forum to strengthen community action against the Triple Threat of new HIV infections, adolescent pregnancies and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).

Held at Kipchoge Sports Complex in Kapsabet, the engagement was graced by the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health, the County Commissioner and the Chair of the Kaburwo Council of Elders, alongside health and community stakeholders.

The forum focused on prevention, early intervention, referral and linkage to health and protection services, while encouraging community leaders to strengthen awareness and support coordinated action.

The engagement strengthens local ownership and collective action to protect adolescents and young people and address the factors driving the Triple Threat in Nandi County.
